The Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana is recruiting for a Staff Physician (Chief, Medicine Service). The incumbent of this position is responsible for the clinical operations and administrative functions of inpatient and outpatient General Internal Medicine, along with the subspecialties of Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Hospitalists, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Palliative Care, Pulmonary and Rheumatology. The Chief of Medicine also is responsible for supervision of the physician staff in these sections of Medicine Service. The incumbent is responsible for participation in the promotion and oversight of appropriate performance improvement and systems redesign activities and advancing the principles of access and timeliness of care. The Chief of Medicine supervises the clinical Section Chiefs in addition to the Medicine Service administrative staff (Supervisory Management Specialist, Secretary, Program Support Specialist and Program Support Analysts). Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • This position is predominantly administrative in nature, but the incumbent may have a minority of their time (10-45%) in a clinical role as appropriate to their clinical discipline and specialty area.
  • Leadership within Medicine Service: The incumbent will determine goals, priorities and direction for the Service and clinical operations and will be responsible for assigning duties to staff within Medicine Service. The incumbent will conduct regular meetings to keep staff abreast of all clinical business, policies, procedures, goals, priorities and directions. Working with the Medicine Service Business Manager, who is supervised by the Chief of Staff, the incumbent will be responsible for the development of position descriptions and competencies for the direct report staff, along with the development and completion of performance standards and appraisals. The incumbent will address grievances, apply disciplinary policies and nominate incentive awards in all matters concerning Medicine Service staff members.
  • Leadership within the Medical Center: The incumbent will participate in wide-range and higher-level management functions for Medicine Service through participation and planning in operational boards, councils and committees throughout the medical center, on campus and in the VISN. This list includes, but is not limited to: Leadership Council, Clinical and Performance Board, Executive Committee of the Medical Staff, Critical Care Committee, Peer Review Committee, Professional Standards Board, Director's Staff Meeting, Access meetings, IU Department of Medicine Executive Committee and, Affiliation Partnership Council, etc.
  • The incumbent will develop and maintain continuing programs in the area of organizational improvement, continuing education and other quality improvement activities. The incumbent will assume active leadership at the VISN and/or national level regarding professional, management and health care delivery issues.
  • The Chief of Medicine works collaboratively with non-Medicine Service Chiefs, supervisory staff, and frontline staff in other departments and sections to effect organizational improvement and participates in national and VISN organizational activities as called upon.
  • The incumbent will oversee the joint recruitment and assignment of practitioners with the academic affiliate, IU School of Medicine.
  • The Chief of Medicine is also highly supportive of our educational and research missions. The incumbent is responsible for having oversight of all housestaff and medical student training activities in Medicine Service. The Chief of Medicine is also responsible for working with the Associate Chief of Staff for Research to assure Medicine Service physician investigators with protected time for research have a proper balance of clinical and research activities and utilize their research time effectively and productively, obtaining VA Merit Review and other grant funding within reasonable timeframes.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:

  • Board certification/board eligibility in an applicable specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties
  • Eligibility to receive a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.
