Job Overview

This position is located in the Mammography Section of the Radiology Department, Clinical Services, Kayenta Health Center, Kayenta, AZ. The purpose of this position is to serve as principle/lead registered diagnostic mammography technologist and case manager for all abnormal breast health diagnoses. Specifically, the incumbent will apply state of the art imaging to reduce health risks associated with breast cancer. In performing this function, the individual provides the necessary competencies or obtains the needed expertise from specialist, as needed.

This position is located at Kayenta Health Center, Division of Clinical Services, Radiology Department, Kayenta, AZ. The incumbent:

  • Plans, develops, implements, maintains, and evaluates a comprehensive program designed to promote breast cancer screening. Responsible for the accuracy, precision, quality, and performance of screening, diagnostic, and invasive mammography done in the Radiology Department. This includes being responsible for all technical requirements and quality assurance measures as required by the FDA, ACR, MQSA, and other mammography accrediting agencies, as well as the overall cleanliness and organization of the mammography suite and associated equipment.
  • Incumbent is responsible for maintaining required experience and continuing education credits as required to maintain certification.
  • Performs standard projections during a screening mammogram and additional projections to ensure that breast tissue is adequately imaged. Ensures correct annotation of images, applies appropriate radiopaque markers to the breast to mark nipples, scars, lumps, etc. Exercises clinical judgment in the application of adequate compression to acquire a diagnostic image. Performs the requested or recommended projections during a diagnostic mammogram. Informs the patient of the right to receive a lay summary result in accordance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act of 1992.
  • Is responsible for follow-up of abnormal mammograms and tracking of abnormal results. This involves maintaining records of every abnormal result, and documenting appropriate and timely follow-up. This requires health record audits, meticulous record keeping and multidisciplinary professional staff interface. Plays a key role in follow-up of patients and outcome analysis in conjunction with the radiologist and/or other departments, as required by the FDA and/or its certified agents. Develops breast imaging protocols, in conjunction with the supervising radiologist.

Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (l) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements:

(l) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by OPM or the employing agency.

All applicants, however, must meet the requirements below.

Specialized Experience: For positions at GS-4 and above: Experience in the operation of diagnostic radiology equipment under the direction of radiologists or other medical officers to produce radiographic studies used in medical diagnosis and treatment.


To qualify for GS-09: 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level.

Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree meets the requirements for GS-9. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
