The Readjustment Counseling Therapist position serves at the Comanche County Veteran Center, VA Medical Center, Oklahoma Healthcare System located at in Lawton, OK. The program was created to provide a broad range of psycho-social services to combat veterans and their family members to assist them in their readjustment to civilian life. The Readjustment Counseling Service provides psych-diagnosis testing and psychological assessment to these clients who display clinically severe or unusual psychological disturbances. Specific clinical/therapeutic tasks of the Readjustment Counseling Therapist duties include, but may not be limited to:
Conducts social/psychological assessments.
Provides highly skilled readjustment counseling services to clients and their families with difficult and complex problems of social, emotional, and vocational adjustment.
Organizes counseling groups and functions as facilitator or therapist for counseling groups.
Benefits and helps clients complete and channel VA documents and forms.
Conducts follow-up of clients by telephone and/or mail.
Serves as consultant to professional nurses, clinical social workers, psychologists, physicians, and staff at the support facility.
Develops and maintains appropriate referral sources.
Refers clients to appropriate resource persons and agencies.
Conducts outreach activities with veterans, and veteran's families, community and service organizations, business and industry professional and the public.
Serves as an alternate technical representative for the fee/contracts program.
Nights and weekends are required. Monday: 8:00am-4:30pm; Tuesday: 8:00am-4:30pm, 11:00am-7:30pm; Wednesday: 8:00am-4:30pm, 11:00am-7:30pm; Thursday: 8:00am-4:30pm, 11:00am-7:30pm; Friday 8:00am-4:30pm; Saturday: 9:00am-1:00pm.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to a appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: All applicants must meet the basic education and/or experience requirement as described below. BASIC EDUCATION:Having successful completion of a full four(4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in a behavioral or social science, or a major field of study directly related to the work of this position. (The number of semester hours required to constitute a major field of study is the amount specified by the college or university attended. If this number cannot be obtained, twenty-four (24) semester hours will be considered as equivalent to a major field of study. The nature and quality of this required course work must have been such that it would serve as a prerequisite for more advanced study in the field of behavioral or social science or subject matter area). BASIC EXPERIENCE:having at least four (4) years of appropriate experience that demonstrates you have the acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. ). (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
COMBINATION OF BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: having an equivalent combination of education and experience as outlined above, which provided you with the knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Driver's License Requirement:**A valid driver license is mandatory. Specialized Experience Requirements*:*In addition to meeting the Basic Education and/or Experience requirement and the English Language Proficiency, you must also have Specialized Experience and/or meet the Education requirement for this position as described below.
Specialized Experience* GS-11:*Having at least one (1) year of specialized experience equipped with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the Readjustment Counseling Therapist position. To be creditable this experience must be equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: working experience conducting family readjustment or social/psychological assessments; providing readjustment counseling services to clients and their families with difficult and complex problems of social, emotional and vocational adjustment; conducting follow-up on clients by telephone and/or mail; serving as a consultant to professional nurses, clinical social workers, psychologists, physicians and staff at a medical facility.
Education* GS-11:Having a Ph. D (or equivalent doctoral degree) OR have successfully completed three full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field directly related to the position to be filled. This education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. *(Transcripts Required)
Combination of Education and Experience* GS-11:*Having a combination of graduate level education and professional experience which may be combined to meet the additional requirements that has provided me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level (in excess of two years of graduate level education) may be combined with experience. SKILL IN DEPENDENTLY ASSESSING AND DETERMINING WHEN IT IS NECESSARY TO CONCLUDE TREATMENT AND WHEN IT IS APPROPRIATE TO REFER CLIENTS AND/OR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS TO ANOTHER SERVICE PROVIDER IN THE AGENCY OR COMMUNITY FOR ADDITIONAL AND/OR CONTINUED SERVICES.
KNOWLEDGE OF OUTSTATION OUTREACH AND COMMUNITY NETWORKING TECHNIQUES THAT WILL IDENTIFY PATIENTS WHO ARE EXPERIENCING PSYCHOSOCIAL AND/OR PSYCHOLOGICAL PROBLEMS AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THEIR MILITARY EXPERIENCES IN A WAR ZONE.
Physical Requirements:Although physical strength is not necessary for this position, emotional maturity, compassion for others and endurance is stressful situations are required. A high level of physical energy is required, as you will be expected to meet with many people in many different places in the course of the work day.
Work Environment: The Readjustment Counseling Therapist will have an office in a building which not located on the grounds of the support facility. This office will serve as both a "treatment" room and an administrative office. However, it is expected that a portion of the services provided will be conducted away from this office, in the offices of other agencies, and in "non-traditional" settings such as clients home, "on the street" consultations, and in other informal settings as required. You may also attend meetings within this medical center and in other agency settings as needed. The nature of this position also requires travel to other geographic areas away from the Vet Center setting.
