Physician (Chief, Anesthesiology Service/Director of the Operating Room)

The Wm. S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital is seeking a full-time Chief of Anesthesiology Service who will also function as the Director of the Operating Room. Candidate will provide administrative management for the effective operation of the Anesthesiology Service. This includes resource management, personnel management, financial accountability, and quality and service oversight, in addition to service representation on facility committees, root-cause analyses, and process improvement projects.

As Director of the Operating Room, candidate provides clinical leadership, management, direction, and collaboration for the planning, coordination, and direction of workflow through the operating rooms. This includes addressing policy, processes, monitoring OR metrics, etc. in collaboration with Nursing and Surgical services. Collaborates with medical staff, management and ancillary staff within the organization to achieve the goals and objectives of the Anesthesiology Service, perioperative nursing services, surgical services, and the organization as a whole.

Provides a full range of anesthesia services for a complex patient population, ranging from routine to complex surgeries. This includes medical direction of Residents and Nurse Anesthetists, as well as MD-only anesthetic care.

Work Schedule: 7:30 – 4:00 Monday through Friday with call rotation.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Non citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Experience in the Operating Room of a complex facility

Must be able to meet the qualifications for a faculty appointment at UW-Madison

Supervisory Experience preferred

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
