The Ophthalmic Health Technician is a member of the optometry team. He/she is highly trained in all technical aspects of an ophthalmic examination, and works under the supervision of an optometrist. In addition, he/she is qualified in the facility computer programs, as they relate to patient care and clinic administration. He/She has experience and training with a complex geriatric patient population which requires general knowledge of geriatric eyecare and medical problems as they relate to the administration of eye examinations and tests, and to the general safety and well-being of the veteran population.
Work Schedule:Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one or more years of specialized experience related to this position. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Health Technician (Optometry). Qualifying specialized experience includes: carrying out the operational activities of the eye clinic to ensure patient requests for treatment or examination are completed and to carry out practitioner's orders regarding special tests, consultation requests, prescriptions, etc.; obtaining data from a detailed history and physical, verifying questionable or controversial points and assisting in the interpretation of the results; receiving patient communications regarding emergent/urgent concerns and to properly triage these patients; utilizing general human ocular anatomy and physiology as well as ocular anatomy and physiology; assisting with the coordination of various patient procedures/surgeries; addressing any and all patient concerns with their glasses and or medications.Specialized experience for this position may have been obtained in technical and medical support positions.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Physical Requirements:The individual must be able to work for sustained periods under pressure. Heavy clinics will occasionally require long hours under hectic conditions with no regular breaks. Overtime may be required on short notice, and the ability to be flexible in regards to patient need is critical.
More specifically, the position requires the operation of several different devices under dim illumination for the examination of patients. These generally require that the operator sit opposite the patient, using one hand to support the eyelids in the static position while the body, head, and other hand of the operator must be able to shift positions sometimes rapidly to obtain the optimal picture field. In addition, the operator's eye is employed in this arrangement and the combination of static position and adjusting movements can be stressful and tiring.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.
