The Geriatric and Extended Care (GEC) Service line is responsible for the care of Veterans in a multitude of programs. GEC provides direct and indirect patient care that includes assessment, diagnosis, planning, and treatment of health problems. There are 35 beds in the Community Living Center (CLC) and 6 beds in Palliative Care Unit (PCU).

The highest degree of good judgment, ethical behavior and professional demeanor is required at all times in the incumbents contacts with patients, their peers and all other employees. Certificate of additional qualifications in Geriatric medicine a plus.

CLC case mix includes: Short Stay Rehab, Skilled Rehab, Long Stay Continuous Care, Respite and Hospice Treating Specialties, PCU. Current veterans' ages range- from 40's to 90's. Maintains current MD license and BCLS certification. Appointed to the Medical Staff.

Some of the responsibilities and duties of the GEC physician include, but are not limited to:

  • Participate in strategic and operational planning, establish workload targets, review staffing and resource utilization, monitor performance measures and development of overall policies governing the provision of medical care in CLC/PCU.

  • Lead screening committee for new admissions to the CLC.

  • Clinical management of residents in CLC/PCU.

  • Serves as a key clinical resource for matters involving Geriatric services.

  • Act as resource to staff on CLC and PCU to develop physical assessment and critical thinking skills.

  • Be an active member of the interdisciplinary team for assigned CLC residents.

  • Serve on various quality improvement and medical center committees as assigned.

  • Reviews, updates policies for GEC Service Line and Medical Center.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:The typical tour is Monday - Friday, day shift.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.

Preferred Experience: Certificate of additional qualifications in Geriatric medicine, Interdisciplinary Team experience, and leadership skills are preferred.
