Registered Respiratory Therapist

The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is responsible for independently administering treatment to ambulatory, non-ambulatory and critically ill patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting. The incumbent sets up and monitors a variety of complex respiratory equipment including but not limited to Volume ventilators and BiPaPs. He/she monitors patients on mechanical ventilators and BiPaPs closely and alters care plan when necessary per physician orders and departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) by independently making adjustments to ventilator and BiPaP settings in order to adjust the patient's ventilatory status on the basis of patient assessment and Arterial blood gas data. Applies advanced ventilator techniques such as: ASSIST CONTROL, SIMV, CPAP, PRESSURE SUPORT, PRESSURE CONTROL and PEEP. The RRT initiates and continually assesses the pulmonary condition of patients receiving respiratory care, using data acquired through physical examination, respiratory monitoring and diagnostic equipment. The Registered Respiratory Therapist performs intubations or assists physician with endotracheal intubations in elective and emergency situations; performs airway management and endotracheal/tracheostomy tube care on patients including securing tubes, stoma cleaning and changing tubes as needed; follows ACLS protocols for advance airway management and life support during emergency situations; draws Arterial blood gases (ABG) from patients through either Arterial lines or needle sticks. He/she performs routine respiratory therapy procedures on patients. The RRT obtains oximetry or ABG data to qualify patients for the home oxygen program. Assembles and calibrates all respiratory therapy equipment after it has been cleaned per SOP. Provides in-service training to Nursing personnel, patients and caregivers relative to the type of treatments ordered, various types of medications used, the set up and operation of respiratory equipment and the necessary cleaning and safety precautions. The respiratory therapists works independently without supervision on all shifts, including days, nights, weekends and holidays.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS: * *a.*Citizenship.* Citizen of the United States. (Non citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) b. Registered Respiratory Therapist. Has a certificate as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either: (1) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or(2) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974. c. Physical Standards. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019. d. English Language Proficiency. RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). PART-TIME REQUIREMENTS: Part-time experience is credited according to the relationship it bears to the full-time workweek (e.g., an RRT who worked 20 hours a week, i.e., half-time, would receive one full-time workweek of credit for each 2 weeks of service). GRADE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting the basic requirements stated above, the following qualifications criteria must be met in determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. a. GS-7. None beyond the basic requirements. b. GS-8. Candidates must have all of the following:

  • (1) At least 1 year of successful experience related to the respiratory therapy at the GS-7 level or equivalent. Qualifying experience at this level is work which includes duties such as: administering assisted and controlled ventilation to patients with tracheotomies and other complex medical problems requiring frequent adjustments in ventilator parameters; administering and monitoring advanced ventilator techniques such as positive end expiratory pressure and continuous positive airway pressure; developing plans for weaning patients from ventilators; assessing the respiratory status of patients using data acquired through physical observation and clinical analysis of blood gas data, chest x-rays, and electrocardiogram to determine the effectiveness of therapy being administered and to make recommendations to physicians regarding changes in treatment; performing the most difficult respiratory therapy procedures to maintain ventilation, including endotracheal intubation, tracheal lavage, and tracheotomy care; and providing in-service training to others in various specialized areas of respiratory care.

  • (2) Demonstrated knowledge and ability needed to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision. Is able to participate with physicians and nurses and other staff in planning respiratory treatment, with great reliance on the individual's knowledge of the equipment.

  • (3) Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide emergency or critical respiratory care; service as a shift leader or supervisor or sole responsible respiratory therapist on a shift; and to plan and conduct training sessions with respiratory therapy students, hospital staff, patients, and family members.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
