Communications Operator

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Operates HF/VHF/Satellite and telephone equipment and office equipment

  • Relays operational aircraft communications, off-decks, and ETA reports to field camps and stations.

  • Maintains radio logs and status reports utilizing Word, Excel, Power Point, and other applications in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Responds to international communications requests and relays information to appropriate agencies.

  • Handles sensitive information in a confidential manner.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the phone and in person.

  • Provides support of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for emergency events and drills.

  • Supports radio communications as required during SAR or mass casualty events/drills, and conveys instructions via UHF/VHF/HF/Satellite as directed by the EOC Director.

  • Notifies communications technicians when equipment malfunctions or failures occur and assists with troubleshooting as needed

  • Keeps track of field camps and vehicle travel away from station.

  • Provides communication support to personnel in the field.

  • Initiates EOC activation as required for overdue field parties and/or distress calls.

  • Works a varied schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage of the communicationscenter. This includes working during station holidays and events.

  • Assists Station Communications Supervisor with special projects as required.

  • Maintains a safe work center, adheres to ASC Safety guidelines, andparticipates in weekly safety meetings.

  • Maintains a safe workplace and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • High school graduate or equivalent is required.

  • Incident Command System (ICS) 100 and 200 certifications required for offer consideration (training offered through FEMA).

  • Minimum two years’ experience in customer service, radio operations, communications technology or related field required.

  • Computer skills required, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and e-mail applications.

  • Good judgment and exceptional communication skills required.

  • Must have an ability to independently prioritize requests by level of urgency.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
