Supervisor AGE

Directly oversees all department operations and supervision of the AGE Department and staff. Participate in goal-setting processes and strategic planning for mission support with other department leaders and program management. Contribute to a safe working environment by coordinating employee training and identification/ mitigation of environmental hazards. Maintains effective communications between departments and represents AGE as needed at operational meetings. Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring, termination and staff advancement based on seasonal performance evaluations. Routinely utilize Independent judgment and discretion to solve problems and identify potential issues

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Complies with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide documentation to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Oversee and perform the AGE service of aircraft, maintains records, logs and reports as required.

  • Supervise staff and provide daily direction, orally and in writing, to ensure continuity of AGE operations during and between shifts.

  • Provides and maintains record of Airfield and Operational training of flight line personnel.

  • Routinely performs and supervises maintenance and repair of AGE at remote airfields.

  • Monitors airfield conditions, such as runway and apron surfaces, airfield lighting, etc., and reports findings to appropriate departments as needed.

  • Assists in developing new ideas to improve the quality, and safety of the AGE department.

  • May be required to work outside on various job sites in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Implements and maintains a safe workplace program and ensures that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Ensures staff attends required trainings and maintains records of departmental trainings.

  • Evaluates job hazards and communicates information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and/or daily crew meetings.

  • Responsible for providing timely performance feedback to staff and timely submission of end-of-season evaluations to Human Resources.

  • Works with Human Resources to address conflict or personnel issues as they arise.

  • Access, review and approve electronic employee timesheets and expense reports.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism.

  • Must be able to professionally and effectively communicate both orally and in writing to management, staff, colleagues and Program Officials. This includes, but is not limited to, staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, division metrics, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

  • May be required to work outside on various jobsites in extreme cold weather and environmentally challenging conditions.

  • Performs other duties as required


  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Minimum five years of experience in vehicle/equipment operation.

  • Two years training at a technical school is highly desirable

  • Prior AGE maintenance experience and three years of supervisory experience required.

  • U.S. Vehicle Operators License required.

  • Must be able to lift, bend and stoop to accomplish job tasking.

  • Critical problem-solving and decision making ability.

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.

  • Attention to detail extremely important.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment safely up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working in extreme outdoors weather conditions.

  • Must be able to use sound judgment and possess solid decision making ability to quickly, safely and effectively solve problems.

  • Must be able to pro-actively identify job hazards and communicate those hazards effectively. Attention to detail is crucial.

  • Must have some computer experience and be able to learn and utilize work order and timesheet software programs.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
