This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. The incumbent will be assigned to the Mental Health and Behavioral Sciences/Community Integration Service, this student will be able to put to use the knowledge gained through recreation/music therapy studies by providing recreation and or therapy services to the patients admitted to the Miami VA Healthcare System. He/she will learn from recreation and/or creative arts therapists how to plan, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of a large variety of treatment modalities which meet the assessed needs of the patients on psychiatric and residential treatment units, who are acutely and chronically ill with a wide variety of physical and mental illnesses and conditions. The duties are, but not limited to:

  • Assists the Recreation Therapist in the implementation of therapeutic recreation treatment plan for group or individual patients

  • Plans and carries out direct patient care activities in accordance to the individual and group treatment plans

  • Supervises and provides education to patients on the effective use of the equipment to meet their treatment goals

  • Evaluates patient's response to therapeutic activity and reports to pertinent therapist.

  • Coordinate treatment plan with other team members

  • Utilizes equipment for the treatment of patients

Work Schedule: 20 hours per week, afternoon/evenings, holidays may be required. Saturday and/or Sunday (at least one weekend day required. Flexible schedule (Student's school/class schedule taking in to consideration.)

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met, providing the student is enrolled in a Master's program in Music and Recreation Therapy upon graduation without a break. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Basic Qualifications:

  • US citizenship

  • English language proficiency as required by 38 USC 7402(d) and 7407(d).
