The Minneapolis VA Health Care System (MVAHCS) is recruiting for a Housekeeping Aide Leader to work with a crew of up to 30 Housekeeping Aides within the Sanitation Operations section of the Environmental Management Service Line (EMS). The incumbent provides leadership and direction to the employees for which s/he is responsible to accomplish the full range of responsibilities assigned.

In addition to work leader responsibilities, incumbent will perform housekeeping duties to include cleaning of corridors, lobbies, offices, bathrooms, stairways, clinics, waiting rooms, etc. Incumbent may operate heavy duty, technical equipment such as battery operated, self-propelled floor scrubbers, self-propelled vacuum sweeper, hot water/steam extraction carpet cleaning machines, etc. With the use of this equipment the incumbent maintains all horizontal and vertical surfaces throughout the Medical Center at a high appearance and sanitation level. S/he ensures that all floor, wall, and ceiling surfaces are cleaned properly with the proper product to provide the maximum results without damage to the surface. Incumbent will monitor the work of Housekeeping Aides while work is in progress to observe that proper work methods, procedures, and safety practices are being followed. Incumbent will provide coordination for requested chair set-ups/take-downs, and other possible special assignments within the scope of EMS. Occasionally operates vehicles (approximately 4% of time or less on a periodic basis) with an approximate gross vehicle weight up to 10,000 pounds.

Your background must demonstrate experience in a variety of cleaning duties, such as sweeping, mopping, and waxing floors; cleaning surfaces such as light fixtures, venetian blinds, and counter-tops; and cleaning restroom facilities including toilets, baths, and sinks.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Effort: The position requires performance of work which involves light physical effort, such as that involved in using vacuum cleaners and dry mops; continually standing, bending, stooping and reaching; frequently lifting and emptying waste baskets; frequently pushing carts loaded with waste; and lifting and carrying items weighing up to 20 pounds. Also performs work which involves moderate to heavy physical effort, such as required to move heavy equipment and furniture, i.e., heavy industrial vacuum cleaners, heavy duty floor scrubbers and buffers, couches, beds, etc., and lifting, carrying and/or moving items weighing up to 40-50 pounds.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.

Functional Requirements: Heavy Lifting (45 lbs and over); Moderate Carrying (15-44 pounds); Pushing (1 – 2 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Walking (up to 3 hours); Standing (up to 3 hours); Kneeling; Repeated bending (up to 1 hour); Near vision correctable at 13” to 16”; Hearing without aid.

Environmental Factors:Dust; Solvents (degreasing agents); Grease and oils; Slippery or uneven walking surfaces; Working around machinery with moving parts; Working on ladders or scaffolding; Working with hands in water; Working closely with others.
