Your tasks and responsibilities

Crop Analytics provides plant molecular diagnostics and genetics expertise throughout the Bayer CropScience (BCS) Seeds & Traits organization. The laboratory group applies globally harmonized analytical and genomics approaches to deliver high quality and cost-effective support for all crops. Crop Analytics laboratories are located across the globe in Asia Pacific, incl. India and Singapore, Europe, and North and South America.

Crop Analytics Labs staff provide technical expertise and execute laboratory analyses according to defined standards, protocols, quality management systems (QMS) and lab procedures with the purpose to contribute to developing and bringing new products to the market, and in support of further business growth and regional expansion. This position will report to the Crop Analytics Lab Manager and is located in Morrisville, NC.

Your primary responsibilities as a Research and Development Specialist III are as follows: • Complete and facilitate high-throughput DNA based testing of GM agricultural crop samples to meet established quality control guidelines and customer objectives; • Execute various lab analyses independently including DNA extraction from multiple agricultural plant species, fluorescence based PCR, Real-time PCR and/or SNP genotyping; • Prioritize and perform multiple tasks in a dynamic and fast paced environment including technically diverse and sophisticated assignments using robotics; • Work with the Crop Analytics lab team leads and internal stakeholders to support GM and native trait testing strategies in soybean; • Assist with the coordination of domestic and international shipments of analytical samples, sample receipt, identification and tracking in applicable databases including LIMS; • Use analytical tools to assemble large datasets, perform data quality control checks, and submit for supervisor approval; • Develop and maintain and a broad understanding of instrumentation, scientific principles and agribusiness. Demonstrate knowledge of specialized laboratory and scientific techniques; • Work with external service partners or outsourcing providers.

• Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in molecular biology and 1+ years of post-baccalaureate experience or BS with 4+ years relevant experience within the agricultural biotechnology industry; • Previous position completing or coordinating PCR-based testing in a routine analytical service lab (preferred throughput in excess of two hundred thousand samples per year); • Minimum of one year of experience selecting and applying fluorescence based PCR assays for zygosity determination or allelic discrimination/SNP genotyping of crop plants is required; • Hands-on experience with two or more of the following is required: field or greenhouse sampling methods for agricultural materials (leaves/seeds), sample barcoding, usage of sample tracking databases (PRISM), or sample shipment logistics; • Demonstrated experience communicating with diverse stakeholders in a deadline driven environment. Able to work under time pressure, with appropriate sense of urgency and accuracy; • Experience using MS Office applications including excel. Visual basic, R, SAS, or other statistical package for data analysis is a plus.

Preferred Skills/Experience:

• Coursework or formal training in plant breeding, germplasm enhancement, and/or plant genetics strongly preferred; • Experience using a lab information management system for analytical project coordination, data recording, and submission preferred.
