Posting Summary

The incumbent will provide data-analytic support to a large and complex program of research and will construct statistically advanced programs in SAS and other software to allow analysis of data from large and sensitive national healthcare datasets. The incumbent will work with investigators and senior center staff to implement sophisticated, longitudinal statistical programming and data analyses for health services research and outcomes studies evaluating the use and effects of pharmacological and other healthcare treatments, utilizing national and state healthcare databases including national Medicaid, nursing home, private insurance, and other datasets reflecting healthcare encounters on very large patient populations (tens of millions of individuals followed over multiple years). Incumbent will participate in implementing federally funded health services research studies and in development of publications reporting results.

Analyses will include application of advanced techniques in SAS software for longitudinal data analysis, data linkage across large datasets, construction of medication use calendars, and statistical modeling of outcomes. Incumbent will apply and interpret appropriate statistical modeling methods; develop and maintain analytic workplans and documentation; and participate in preparation of results for journal publication.

The position requires high-level skills in data management and statistical programming, with strong experience in SAS programming with very large datasets, preferably entailing longitudinal analyses and use of advanced statistical methods. We seek an individual with a strong work ethic and problem-solving skills, who takes initiative and enjoys making sense of complex data, has strong attention to detail and scientific curiosity, is a good collaborator, and has the ability and motivation to progress rapidly in assimilating and applying advanced techniques in statistical analysis and programming; complex data analyses with SAS and other software; and health services and outcomes research. Experience with techniques such as propensity scoring, event history analysis, and analysis of healthcare claims data would be a plus.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related scientific field or discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of general research principles and practices. Also requires a minimum of five years of relevant professional research experience, excellent communication skills, and computer literacy.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The position requires experience writing statistical programs to process and analyze large, complex datasets, including experience with SAS. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as close attention to detail, are required for understanding data and programming requirements, checking one’s own work and that of others, documentation of analytic work, consultation with colleagues and team leadership, and reporting of results. Candidate will need to be well organized with strong interpersonal, time management, and analytic skills; the ability to conduct analyses efficiently and expeditiously while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail; and the ability to communicate effectively the requirements, processes, and results of work to colleagues. At least one year of SAS programming experience is required, and a higher level of experience would be desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

Masters degree or higher preferred with graduate coursework in social science, policy analysis, public health, statistics or biostatistics, or related area. SAS Macro and Proc SQL experience and experience in analysis of health care claims data for health services research are highly desirable. SAS Base/Advanced Programming training/certification is useful. Knowledge of health care data standards and codes, e.g., ICD-9/ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS, National Drug Codes, elements of claims data, is preferred. Experience with healthcare data management/medical informatics is highly desirable. Experience with Web site creation and analytic dashboards would be useful. The successful applicant will have a high degree of computer literacy using Windows.

Equipment Utilized

Microsoft Office products. Software packages such as SAS, SPSS, R, Stata and other specialized software for statistical programming and complex data manipulation. Knowledge of Python is desirable.
