Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Unit Computing Specialist for the Business Services-IT unit of the Institutional Planning and Operations Department. This position reports to the Assistant Director of IT, the Unit Computing Specialist will provide end-user support, resolve hardware and software computer problems. Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Receives, prioritizes, documents and successfully resolves end-user issues.

  • The Unit Computing Specialist will also be responsible for the setup and installation of workstations, laptops and peripheral devices.

  • Maintains the help-desk inventory database, and document PC-related procedures.

  • Conducts hands-on training sessions and instructional classes for students, and staff.

  • Assists in the development of user procedures and security procedures, the maintenance of software and documentation libraries, and remains up-to-date in new developments and technologies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Handles a variety of complex computing issues with little or no documented solution.

  • Works with little oversight on day-to-day issues, the candidate will have the authority to troubleshoot, research and take the necessary corrective action.

  • Responsible for prioritizing his/her workload and actively resolving user requests The Unit Computing Specialist will support users on all three campuses within the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations.

  • Responsible for maintaining the inventory and help desk database.

  • Works independently and make desktop configuration changes to complete the task at hand.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

  • Knowledge of university computing environments is preferred, as is knowledge of networks, LANs, and network software.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience with MS-Windows 7, MS-Office Suite.

  • Knowledge of computer hardware and application support.

  • Ability to absorb and retain information and conduct research into a wide range of computing related issues.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

  • Must have excellent verbal, written communication skills and organizational skills.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 3-5 years working experience as a helpdesk technician or in a related field preferred.

  • MCSA and/or MCSE Preferred.
