The Assistant Chief will have full authority to act in the absence of the Chief of Emergency Medicine and will directly supervise and evaluate the performance of the physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, physician assistants and health technicians assigned to Emergency Medicine Service. In this capacity, your duties may include the following:

  • He/She will keep abreast of the operations and/or personnel issues of Emergency Medicine in order to make informed decisions.
  • He/She will provide patient care in the SLVHCS Emergency Medicine Service and in that capacity will be required to perform expected routine procedures that, as a Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, he/she is privileged to perform through the usual credentialing and privileging process.
  • He/She will have oversight of Process Improvement/Quality Assurance/Utilization Review projects and other administrative duties as assigned.
  • He/She will provide leadership, planning, organization, staffing, coordination, and evaluation for emergency department activities and will ensure the ethical and competent practice of emergency medicine within the Service.
  • He/She will work in close conjunction with the Chief, Emergency Medicine Service, to develop patient care process improvement projects and provide input into activation of Emergency Medicine Service.
  • He/She will provide oversight and education for medical students and trainees from affiliated medical schools.
  • He/She will ensure that ACGME requirements for Emergency Medicine trainees are met.
  • He/She will meet the requirements of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of healthcare Organizations that apply to Emergency Medicine Service.
  • He/She will perform all other duties as assigned by the Service Chief.
  • Board certification in Emergency Medicine is required. He/she will also have BLS and ACLS for the position. ATLS is encouraged.

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday-Friday & Weekends - Days, Nights & Evenings (40 hour work week/80 hour two week pay period).

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

* Basic Requirements*: **

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

Qualifications include strong administrative and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to provide patient care and supervise trainees in all healthcare settings. Expertise and board certification in Emergency Medicine procedures is required. Candidates must have academic credentials to be qualified for a faculty appointment (assistant or associate professor). Academic rank is determined by our affiliate, Tulane University School of Medicine.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organization (e.g., professional, philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
