The Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) is seeking a Critical Care board certified or eligible physician with strong academic interest/experience to join the Section of Critical Care Medicine at FHCC and provide service in a 10-bed mixed closed ICU caring for Veteran and Department of Defense (DOD) patients. The physician will provide additional services at FHCC contingent on training, experience, seniority, and needs of the Critical Care Section and will be considered for academic appointment at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS).

Work Schedule: This is a full time position. Generally working hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. plus a shared call schedule (typically one week every four weeks). The selected candidate must be flexible and be willing to cover colleagues in times of need.

Basic Requirements

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

  • Board Certified - Internal Medicine. Additional sub-specialties (e.g. pulmonary medicine) a plus.
  • Graduate from a critical care fellowship program who is a team player with leadership characteristics committed to delivering high-quality multidisciplinary critical care and getting involved in basic and translational research in the field.
  • Early or mid-career Intensivist with track record of peer-reviewed funded research.
  • The physician must possess and maintain current BLS and ACLS certifications.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
