Sr. Engineer, System Modeling Group – Norwood, MA

The System Modeling Group is a key resource for innovation within the Test & Measurement segment of ITW, housed within Instron and leading other business units in new product development where modeling and advanced engineering are required. The Sr. Engineer will perform the work of producing a mathematical model of a product (either future or existing) with the primary goals of assisting new product development, failure analysis, and control system design. Also responsible for projects, working with the respective business unit’s engineering team, to provide engineering guidance and direction on the design and delivering a packaged system model for use in software application and/or other analysis by the business unit. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Analyze a product/system and break down the system to the fundamental physics in a model using computational tools such as Matlab.Use the model to perform analysis, identify key parameters, suggest creative solutions, and communicate the optimized design specification.

  • Identify areas of weakness in the model.Direct and/or perform experiments (either physical or simulation) or research to fill in gaps in the model.Also, identify areas for efficiency boosts in model computation by eliminating complexity.

  • Periodically prepare adequate reports, charts, and other data required to report project status to company management.


Successful applicants will have a Master’s/PhD in Mechanical Engineering which includes a comprehensive knowledge of all areas of mechanical engineering with emphasis in control, dynamics, thermo-fluids, and numerical methods. Preferred experience with system modeling (i.e. Matlab Simulink/Simscape) and simulation (CFD and/or FEA) and the ability to properly and adequately communicate both verbal and written instruction and ideas to others. At least 20% of domestic and international travel required.
