The Oklahoma City VA Health Care System (OKC VA HCS) is recruiting for a full time Physician Assistant. Approximately 50% of this positions time will be spent in the Plastic Surgery section of Surgery Service, while the remaining time will be spent in the Podiatry section of Surgery Service. The OKC VA HCS is an active teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Providing ongoing outpatient and inpatient care for assigned patients.
  • Screening outpatients to determine need for future care.
  • Prescribing medications within defined scope of practice.
  • Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms etc.
  • Initiating and expediting request for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies.
  • Making interim summaries of the patient's medical record.
  • Dictating notes on procedures performed for which the APN/PA-C is responsible.
  • Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 7:00 am to 4:30 pm (tour subject to change)

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizenship**. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Education: Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations; and a Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Certification: Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). NOTE: Recent PA graduates who are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) may be employed by the VA on a temporary basis for a period of not to exceed two years. (Certification must be uploaded with your application package)

  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Two years of Physician Assistant experience in a surgical clinical setting.

Physical Requirements: Position requires moderate to heavy lifting and carrying, pushing, walking and standing for extended periods, ability for simultaneous rapid and mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4 (one eye, glasses permitted), ability to distinguish basic colors, emotional and mental stability; hearing aid permitted. Incumbents may experience exposure to blood and body fluids.
