Zip-Pak, in Ottawa, Illinois is seeking a Process Engineer. This position is responsible for managing and executing production process projects within the Zip-Pak production facility. The Process Engineer will provide technical input on material selection and fitness for use in support of Zip-Pak Operations and in support of ITW Strategic Sourcing initiatives. He or she will confer with NPD, Production, Quality and Applications Engineering to create and improve processes that optimize manufacturability, functionality, cost and quality. He or she will work under the direction of the Operations Manager in a fast paced collaborative environment supportive of program initiatives and compliant with company best practices. Work in a cross functional team consisting of other engineers, technicians and production staff who are responsible for the design and improvement of processes from concept through to commercial production.

EssentialDuties and Responsibilities

Principle Accountabilities

  • Managesscope, timeline and requirements to achieve project success.

  • Coordinatesthe design and assembly of production tooling between engineering andproduction.

  • Plansand organizes project time lines for assigned projects using establishedformalized Project Management tools. Advises management of any cost/deliveryrelated issues for assigned projects.

  • Conductsregular project meetings with customers and internally, publishes timelyproject updates, and follows-up continuously on all open critical path items.

  • Demonstratedknowledge of the zipper extrusion processes within Zip-Pak globally.

  • Workswith Strategic Sourcing group to identify improvements with materialprocurement.

  • Workswith operations team to identify improvements in production materials andprocesses.

  • Plansand implements laboratory operations to develop material and fabricationprocedures for new materials to fulfill product cost and performance standards.

  • Conferswith producers of polymer materials during investigation and evaluation ofmaterials suitable for specific product applications.

  • Displaysstrong mechanical aptitude; demonstrates a good understanding of dynamicmachine design.

  • Interfaceswith customers and suppliers on project matters.

  • Createsstandard procedures, work instructions and validation plans as required

  • Workseffectively with production, engineering, quality and sales personnel forprocess improvement initiatives in all of Zip-Pak’s global facilities.

  • Managesengineering change cycle.

  • ProducesQA and process documents for new products / processes.

  • Hasknowledge of polymers, extrusion, and injection molding techniques.

  • Demonstratescomputer skills required for the position – spreadsheet and database softwareand the ability to read and manipulate 3D CAD drawings.

Educationand/or Experience

  • Bachelor’sdegree in Mechanical Engineering or similar technical field.

  • 1to 3 years of experience in industrial manufacturing, or equivalent combinationof education and experience.

  • Experiencein plastic extrusion is preferred.

  • Trainingin experimental design techniques and exposure to packaging industry isdesired.

  • FDA,USDA, CFIA, and food contact experience preferred.
