Position Description :
This position provides clinical, operational and organizational leadership to all instrument and endoscope processing departments in PeriOperative Services. These 5 departments- spanning 2 campuses - are responsible for all instrument and endoscope reprocessing steps through terminal sterilization and high level disinfection for the following areas, supporting over 43,000 surgical and endoscopy procedures annually.
Instrument and Endoscope Processing supports the following departments:
HUP PeriOp - 31 OR’s
Labor and Delivery - 3 OR’s and all delivery rooms
Perelman SurgiCentre – 8 OR’s
Perelman Endoscopy Center – 12 procedure rooms
Patient care units and hospital departments- 20Clinical Practices (CPUP) – 12Annual production volumes for these fast-paced processing areas exceeds:
140,000 instrument sets
33,000 flexible endoscopes
167,000 single items
24,000 sterilization cycles
This position ensures consistent application of clinical, operational and human resources policies, procedures and practices. He / she oversees compliance with all Infection Control, JCAHO, DOH, CMS, federal, state, local and professional organization guidelines and regulations. Acts as the primary interface with Infection Control practitioners and regulatory staff.
This position acts as the primary interface with Periop nursing leadership and attending surgeons as well as department leadership throughout the hospital for 30 plus customers utilizing instrument and endoscope processing.
He/ she works with managers and department directors to manage instrument inventory and loss control utilizing TDOC instrument management system. He / she oversees ongoing analysis of instrument utilization for best use of resources.
Directs the efficient and effective management of equipment and supplies across these departments
• Reviews monthly financial reports with managers / supervisors to monitor supply usage and FTE numbers and account for variances.
• Works with finance colleagues to make changes to monthly financial reports as needed and to explain variances.
• Assists with the preparation of the annual operating budget ($69M) for PeriOperative Services.
• Works with managers and supervisors to:
Monitor fte’s/ vacancies / payroll
Achieve desired FTE productivity metrics
Achieve optimal use of staff to meet clinical support requirements
Represents Instrument and Endoscope Processing and PeriOperative Non-Nursing Clinical Support Services in various meetings and committees- at the department, entity and system level.
Provides leadership and direction to the Managers, Supervisors and staff of both clinical and non- clinical departments.
Recruits, hires, terminates and conducts performance management for direct reports.
PeriOperative Quality and Process Improvement - responsible for active membership in Quality Committee. Will assume responsibility to lead process improvement initiatives with multi-disciplinary groups. Will act as mentor for PIIA process.
PeriOperative Executive Leadership group – responsible for active participation in leadership group. Includes thoughtful decision making and implementation and execution of policy and practice changes.
OR Committee - contributing member of OR Committee for clinical departments and non-clinical initiatives.
Minimum Requirements :
Certifications/Degree Requirements: Clinical background Baccalaureate Degree required. Masters preferred. Must have minimum 5-years leadership experience in an academic health care setting. Working clinical knowledge of PeriOperative Services or experience in operations management strongly preferred. Must be very familiar and comfortable with JCAHO / CMS regulations for infection control relative to instrument and scope processing. Direct relevant clinical experience in a fast paced, highly technical processing/ procedure area strongly encouraged. Examples include Operating Room, Pharmacy – clean room, and/ or sterile product manufacturing experience.

Must be able to proactively plan for change relative to evolving standards and emphasis on infection prevention in the instrument and endoscope processing areas.
