The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

Position Details: May be Permanent, Temporary, or Term with a tour of duty of Full-Time, Part-Time or Intermittent. The Agency has the option of extending Term Appointments for up to a maximum of four years.

This position requires that you obtain and maintain clinical privileges. If they are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee may be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from the Federal service.
Assess patients for emergency care and triages based on history, physical assessment. Provides comprehensive nursing care for acutely ill and/or critically ill patients. Monitor or evaluate medical conditions of patients in collaboration with other health care professionals. Plan, evaluate, or modify treatment programs based on information gathered by observing and interviewing patients, or by analyzing patient records. Documents nursing interventions, therapeutic measure administered, patient's reactions, patient teaching and understanding. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician to include, but not limited to, medication administration, intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, treatments and maintains those measures taken which are ongoing in nature. Operates and monitors specialized equipments. Initiates and maintains IV therapy including blood products.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants will be required to verify they possess a current, valid, unrestricted license in any State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth or Puerto Rico, or a Territory of the United States In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-
GS-09 Grade Level:
- 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a master's degree OR 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level.
GS-10 Grade Level:
- 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level.
At the GS-09 grade level and above, positions require 1 year of specialized experience in the specific specialty area of nursing that is being filled.
Example of specialized work experience to perform professional nursing duties in the care of trauma and emergency patients managing critical patient care in varying medical situations reflecting the knowledge of hospital policy and procedures relating to patient care.
Note: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions which both education and experience are acceptable. Graduate-level education must have been in nursing with a concentration in a field of nursing (e.g., teaching, a clinical specialty, research, administration, etc.) or in a closely related non-nursing field directly applicable to the requirements of the position to be filled.
