Basking in sunshine 300 days a year in the aptly named Valley of the Sun, the Phoenix VA Health Care System is located near downtown Phoenix, Arizona. Although renowned for its warm, dry climate, Arizona's capitol offers much more than great weather. The Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System (VA HCS) is currently recruiting a full time permanent Staff Pulmonary Physician in the Medicine Service, Pulmonary Department, five days per week, with rotating weekend coverage and evening and weekend call, when necessary. Clinic services are required five days per week which includes patient examinations, patient education for procedure preparation, contacting patients with procedure results, and consult triaging.Pulmonary clinic and scheduled procedures will occur during normal work hours, see below, weekend coverage may be required on a rotating basis, and some on call may be required. The Pulmonary Physician will need to manage and perform the following items, but not limited to:

  • Pulmonary clinic to include examination of patient and establish medical diagnoses by patient history, physical examination, and other criteria.

  • Interpret pulmonary function test and blood gases.

  • Perform inpatient and outpatient pulmonary consultations.

  • Perform Pulmonary and ICU procedures. The following are some of the procedures that are performed at our Medical Center: 1) chest tubes, 2) intubations and advanced airway management, 3) right heart catherizations, 4) exercise testing, 5) central line placement, 6) arterial line placement, 7) hemodialysis catheter placement, 8) standard bronchoscopy, 9)bedside ultrasound, 10) intravenous pacing, 11) endobronchial utlrasound, 12) naviagational bronchoscopy and 13) percutaneous trachostomies. It is understood that not all applicants are capable of doing all the foregoing procedures and having competency in all of them is not required. The minimum requirement is competency in items 1-10.

  • Competency in conscious/deep sedation and flouroscopy is required.

  • ACLS certification is necessary.

  • If applicant is certified in sleep medicine, they will interpret sleep studies, overnight oximetries, see patients in sleep clinic and perform/interpret other methodologist related to sleep medicine.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Ability to manage a sleep program. If you have this preferred experience, please annotate appropriately in your CV.

Leadership: The incumbent will be expected to fully participate in peer reviews, quality improvement metrics, infection control, and participate in relevant committees.

Education/Training: The incumbent will be required to provide support for the pulmonary fellowship site director in accordance with the recommendations of the program director at Banner University Medical Center, Phoenix.

Research: Incumbent will be expected to participate in intramural and extramural research projects.

TOUR OF DUTY: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
