Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will leverage a deep understanding of automotive plastics and molding technologies to identify and develop innovative new coatings to meet PPG customer needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Interacting with automotive parts molders and paint customers to communicate R&D activities, understand future trends in plastic substrates, solve coatings related problems and identify new development opportunities as needed.

  • Designing and executing work plans to develop new coating formulations.

  • Characterizing substrates to understand variation and differences.

  • Analyzing experimental results using statistical tools, forming conclusions, documenting and communicating results and recommending a path forward.

  • Collaborating with all R&D functions including new resin synthesis, coatings applications, analytical testing, physical testing and scale up to meet project goals.

  • Interacting with PPG Platform Development Teams, Product Management, Manufacturing, Legal and EH&S functions to insure successful development of new technologies.

  • Monitoring market trends and global research activities, both industrial and academic, and initiating creative test drills that lead to projects when technical and business feasibility is demonstrated.

  • Conduct periodic technical exchanges with key plastic resin suppliers and formulators

  • Current product line understanding and direction

  • Explore opportunities for collaboration and future developments

  • Supervising and directing the work of technicians and junior level professionals, as needed.

  • Maintaining an organized and safe work environment.

  • Complying with all requirements for laboratory quality certification.

Experience and Education A technical degree with 5 years of experience in the plastics molding industry is required. Coatings experience is not required. PPG will provide extensive training in coatings formulation. The successful candidate is expected to develop new coatings in a laboratory environment, while maintaining relevant knowledge of state-of-the-art plastics industry materials, processes, equipment and trends. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. Experience with automotive coatings and customers is desirable, but not required.
