Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

Dietitian for the Professional Services Division, Dietary Department located at the Hopi Health Care Center in Polacca, Arizona and reports to the Director, Professional Services. Dietitian will plan and conduct nutritional programs to assist in the promotion of health and control of disease.

  • Monitor food service operations to ensure conformance to nutritional, safety, sanitation and quality standards.
  • Assess nutritional needs, diet restrictions and current health plans to develop and implement dietary-care plans and provide nutritional counseling.
  • Advise patients and their families on nutritional principles, dietary plans and diet modifications, and food selection and preparation.
  • Counsel individuals and groups on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
  • Consult with physicians and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of patient or client.
  • Plan, conduct, and evaluate dietary, nutritional, and epidemiological research.
  • Write research reports and other publications to document and communicate research findings.
  • Manage quantity food service departments or clinical and community nutrition services.
  • Coordinate diet counseling services.

Degree: dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by The American Dietetic Association (ADA) in effect at the time of graduation.

Licensure: Registration with the Commission on Dietetic Registration in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:


Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector.

GS-09 Grade Level:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. OR
  • Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
  • A combination of graduate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements

GS-11 Grade Level:

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level. OR
  • Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR
  • A combination of graduate education and specialized experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
