Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

This is a Direct Hire Open Continuous Announcement (OCA)for a Permanent Full-Time Supervisory Medical Officer for the Clinical Services Division located at the Hopi Health Care Center in Polacca, Arizona. Supervisory Medical Officer will serve as the Deputy Clinical Director with responsibility for the departmental organization, planning, implementation and evaluation of clinical services and will report directly to the Chief Clinical Director. Qualified candidates with a complete application will be considered for the current vacancy. Applications will be reviewed on a bi-weekly basis. Period of Eligibility: Applications will remain eligible for three (3) months from the time the application is received.

  • Provides comprehensive medical care for Ambulatory Care, Inpatient Unit, Labor and Delivery and Emergency Room Departments.
  • Provides direct and indirect supervision to health care professionals including support staff.
  • Confers with and makes recommendations to the hospital administration in representation of the Medical Staff pertaining to hospital policy.
  • Participates in medical staff program review, quality assurance, performance improvement, and committee meetings.
  • Responsible for the practice of medicine or direct service to patients involving the performance of diagnostic, preventative, or therapeutic services to patients in hospitals and clinics.
  • Prescribe or administer treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination, and other specialized medical care to treat, prevent illness, disease, or injury.
  • Monitor patients' conditions and progress and reevaluate treatments as necessary.
  • Refer patients to medical specialists or other practitioners when necessary.
  • Coordinate work with nurses, pharmacists, social workers, and other allied health professionals in the provision of a variety of health services.

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): All Physicians must meet the following basic requirements:

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country.

Graduate Training Subsequent to Degree: 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., 1 year internship or the first year of a residency program. This graduate training must by approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the U.S. or Canada.

Licensure: Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the U.S.

Residency Training:5 years of residency training in a Medical Specialty OR have equivalent training and work experience in a Medical Specialty (e.g., a senior specialist with 3-4 years of experience beyond residency training) that demonstrates the ability to provide patient care of an extremely difficult and responsible level.

Note: Within Federal clinical and training programs, a distinction is made between general practice and specialist positions. Specialist positions require graduate training and experience related to the specialty and subspecialty of the position to be filled. Experience may not be substituted for training essential for performing specialized duties. The length and content of residency programs depends upon the specialization and requirements of recognized accrediting American medical specialty boards.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector evaluating subordinate employees and/or supervisors and acts as reviewing official for evaluations of departmental employees; participating in making selections of subordinate employees and recommends approval of departmental selections in filling vacancies; ordering, performing, and interpreting tests and analyzing records, reports, and examination information to diagnose patients condition; and collecting, recording, and maintaining patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examinations results.

Specialized Experience in administrative, or clinical management or supervisory experience in the health care field preferred. Work must have involved a close working relationship with departmental managers and analysis and/or coordination of administrative, clinical, or other service activities, and provided knowledge of the following:

  • Missions, organizations, programs, and requirements of health care delivery systems;
  • Regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups; and
  • Government-wide, agency, and facility systems and requirements in various administrative areas such as budget, personnel, and procurement.

Applicants must also possess:

  • Management ability to delegate authority, evaluate and oversee people and programs, recognize and adapt to changing priorities; and
  • Knowledge of the interrelationships and interdependencies among various medical and administrative services and programs.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.
