*We are recruiting for a Nurse Practitioner (Family, Women's Health or Adult specialty) to serve as a Locum (PRN) who will work in the place of the regular Nurse Practitioner who is absent, or when a clinic is short-staffed. This position reports to the Portland Area Director, Division of Clinical Support, in the Portland Area Office. This position will be located in Portland, OR; *however, based on the need of the health centers, incumbent will be assigned to any of the Indian Health Service Units in Idaho, Washington or Oregon.

This open continuous announcement allows acceptance of applications throughout the open period with eligible applicants being placed on a standing register and referred for consideration as vacancies occur. If hired, you will be assigned a temporary (not-to-exceed 1 year) appointment with an intermittent work schedule which means employment is without a regularly scheduled tour of duty. You are only paid for actual hours worked. Travel and per diem costs to temporary duty station(s) will be paid according to Federal travel regulations. The agency has the option of extending temporary appointments for a maximum of 2 years. This position is being announced concurrently under Excepted Service/Merit Promotion procedures .   • Analyze and interpret patient histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses.
  • Order developmental and laboratory tests as necessary to assure an accurate diagnosis.
  • Interpret test results discriminating between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Prescribe drugs to treat specific illnesses.
  • Instruct patient and families regarding the treatment plan and any follow-up required.

INDIVIDUAL OCCUPATIONAL REQUIREMENTS - BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) - Nurse Practitioners must meet the following three basic requirements:

EDUCATION: Degree or diploma from a professional Nurse Practitioner educational program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed by the applicant. A Masters in Nurse Practitioner is preferred.

LICENSURE: Applicants must have an active, current registration as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or equivalent from a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

CERTIFICATION: Current certification in a Nurse Practitioner specialty (Family, Women's Health or Adult) from a U.S. nationally recognized credentialing body such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).

*MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: *In addition to the Basic Requirements all applicants must meet the specialized experience requirement as listed below:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Your resume must demonstrate at least 1 year of full-time specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-11) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: serving as an independent practitioner providing comprehensive primary and/or specialty care for patients; securing health history from patients; conducting physical examinations; ordering developmental and laboratory tests as necessary to assure an accurate diagnosis; interpreting test results discriminating between normal and abnormal; prescribes drugs to treat specific illnesses; and instructing patients and family members of treatment plan and follow-up required.

Time-In-Grade Requirements: Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Direct Hire authority.

This is a temporary appointment not-to-exceed 1 year. An additional 1-year extension may be authorized for a total appointment of 2 years. Extension is not guaranteed and no promise of extension is implied.

As a LOCUM/PRN (intermittent) employee, there is no guarantee of hours available to work (could be 1 to 80 hours in any 2-week period) and incumbent will be paid only for the hours worked.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Security Clearance: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation.
