The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). This position is the Physician Assistant for the Rapid City IHS. The incumbent reports to the Physician Supervisor in the ER Department at the Rapid City IHS, Rapid City, South Dakota.

This position is being announced concurrently under Excepted Service Examining Plan/Merit Promotion Plan (ESEP/MPP) procedures. Major Duties:

  • Assess, plan and provide comprehensive and therapeutic medical care to individual geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric and infant patient and their families.
  • Assure preparation of appropriate medical records for all patient visits to assure the accumulation and organization of all pertinent clinical data to provide comprehensive medical care.
  • Collaborate with other health care professionals to develop treatment protocols, standards of practice and policies.
  • Teach and counsel patients on disease prevention and health maintenance techniques.
  • Maintain and improve professional knowledge and skill, maintain current clinical competence and attend all mandatory training.

All applicants must meet the following basic requirement:

Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or educational institution that is accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the Secretary, U.S. Department of Education.

Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination; must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.

In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-


Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: assessing, diagnosis and treatment of minor illnesses, managing chronic health problems, primary care for trauma cases including suturing, conducting physical examinations, emergency care, providing counseling and health instructions to patients and families, and ability to document care in patient record. Experience identifying medical problems and determining appropriate action to treat the problem, including referral to a physician; performing specified diagnostic and therapeutic practices and procedures; providing a wide range of emergency services in the absence of the physicians, including primary care of trauma and life-saving procedures.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from Federal service.

This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
