The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing and growing a program providing excellence in the care and treatment of patients with complex or chronic wounds in the inpatient and outpatient setting.

In collaboration with the service line leadership team, he/she assumes responsibility for the development, implementation and program management of the wound healing program at the Richmond VAMC. This includes supervision and oversight to the Wound Care Team.

The program will include an integrated medical approach to wound care/healing and is fully supported by surgical and medical specialties.

Incumbent will be an active member of hospital and community committees that are related to wound healing patient care and community awareness, represents the program at local, state and national meetings.

He/she will lead appropriate teams and committees to facilitate standardization of best practices and collaboration throughout the Richmond VAMC and affiliated CBOCs

Oversees the development and implementation of patient educational material for all patients who may benefit from a comprehensive wound healing program (s). Also develops, coordinate and participate in community awareness programs about wound healing, diagnosis, and treatment options.

He/she will practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation. Ensures quality care is given while maximizing capture of work load and financial reimbursement and developing opportunities for cost savings.

He/she will organize services in a manner to ensure timely and appropriate access and triage of services. Coordinates and facilitates patient flow, communication, and information flow between inpatient to outpatient care settings as needed.

He/she will serve as an expert on all aspects of wound healing to health care professionals, staff, patients, families and the community. Facilitates ongoing professional education programs for key stakeholders across the system.

He/she should demonstrate motivation for learning through independent reading, professional networking and attending relevant conferences and seminars. He/she will develop and participate in research related to wound healing.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.


  • Board Eligible/Board Certified and possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • Candidates must be eligible for academic appointment at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine. Board certification or eligibility is required for academic appointment at VCU.


  • The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.
