The purpose of the class is to direct traffic at assigned intersections in order to assist school pupils in safe crossing. The class is responsible for directing traffic, enforcing traffic laws, and participating in school safety programs. The class works according to set procedures under direct supervision. Supervision: Exercised: Classification typically does not supervise. Received: Typically reports to a Police Sergeant or above. Note: Other reporting relationships may applyThis is a part-time position of 20 hours per week with a split morning and afternoon schedule when school is in session.

Example of Duties:

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. Directs traffic at assigned intersections on school days to provide safe crossings for children going to and from school; directs traffic in commercial districts during parades and holiday season. Writes and reports traffic violations and testifies in traffic court. Participates in school patrol programs and gives talks to interested groups on school traffic safety. Participates in internal safety programs for the school and in conferences concerning children who violate school traffic safety regulations. Writes regular activity reports. Position requires the ability to work a split work schedule of 2 hours in the early morning as schools open and 2 hours in the late afternoon as schools let out.

Salary for this position is $11.66 hour.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:

Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance. An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification. No Special Certification or License required.

Requirements include the ability to stand for long periods of time and the ability to work a split work schedule of both morning and afternoon hours. Preferred candidates will have experience directing traffic and experience supervising children. Successful completion of Police Background check including drug screen required for this position.
