This position is located in the Medicine Service, Salisbury VA Medical Center, Salisbury, NC.All staff physicians assigned to Medicine Service will meet basic requirements and hold a degree of doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy from a college or university approved by the Administrator; complete an ACGME accredited residency satisfactory to the Administrator, meet the physical standards as described by the Administrator and will be licensed to practice without restrictions in a state or territory of the United States. All physicians will be board eligible/board certified in Internal Medicine or Family Practice. Each physician will established and maintain professional relationships within Medicine Service, and with other services and facility management which result in improved patient care.

Major Duties:


*Serves as acting chief of the section (if appropriate), as needed.

*Provide guidance and support to the nurse practitioners assigned to Medicine Service in their respective areas of expertise.

*Provide guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Medicine Service/subspecialty services and clinics according to the standards outlined in Center Policy Memorandum, 11-4,

*Participate in and attend medical center committees and/or teams as assigned by the Chief, Medicine Service and in his/her absence or absence of their respective Section Chief.

*Participate in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Chief, Medicine Service.

*Annually develop and evaluate professional and personal goals.

*Identify individual professional learning needs and participate in formal programs, workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities, completes facility wide mandatory education yearly


*Provide quality patient-centered patient care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Medicine Service.

*Maintain clinical privileges in the areas of his/her expertise and in all areas required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments/responsibilities within Medicine Services.

*Demonstrate sound decision making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians.

*Facilitate the delivery of appropriate patient care in collaboration with other health professionals, medical center staff, and management.

*Serves as staff attending for sub-specialty consult service as assigned.

*Participate as a peer reviewer process when requested.

*Participate in multidisciplinary activities involving the treatment plan and discharge plans of patients admitted to the Medicine bed services.

*Keep informed of developments in the management and treatment of diseases and illness through continuing medical education, both formal and informal.

*Consistently demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate.

*Demonstrate skill in implementation of clinical practice guidelines and protocols for patients with complex medical care needs.

*Utilize problem solving methodologies to resolve problems that impact on patient care or staff performance.

*Develop the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care.

*Meet scholarly activity requirements, including peer-reviewed publication, discover, and national professional organization participation.


*Supports the medical Center-wide research mission.

*Assist in conducting studies regarding treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects

of patient care when appropriate.

*If involved in an ongoing research project, abides by all VA regulations governing

research protocols/policies and/or procedures.

*Encourages participation in clinical research among other staff members.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship

  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Licensure and Registration – Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or in the District of Columbia. The Physician must maintain a current registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements - Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  • Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  • Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.
  • For residents, graduation from an approved medical school as described above is required.
  • First-Year Residency (Internship) - Completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was competed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment on the basis of the candidate's acceptability for residency training. Approved residencies are:
  • Those approved by the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals, American Medical Association, in the list published for the year the residency was completed, OR
  • Other residencies or their equivalents which the Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training. The Board may determine that the residency requirement has been met if the candidate has completed 1 year of postgraduate education.

The following requirementsfor this position are as follows:

  • The ideal candidate will be board certified/eligible in gastroenterology with experience in clinical gastroenterology and experience in clinical performing endoscopic procedures.

Preferred Experience: Board Certifications (highly preferred).
