Responsible for providing safe transportation to participants in a timely, competent manner and communicating important information relevant to overall care plan to the multidisciplinary team.This position is critical to setting the tone and desired experience expected by LIFE Geisinger for each participant on trips to the Center and other appointments.Reports to the Transportation Coordinator, LIFE Geisinger, Geisinger Diversified Services.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Responsible for van and passengers during transport, providing care in a manner, which ensures participant satisfaction and retention.2. Operates equipment safely and in compliance with vehicle licensing regulations.3. Escorts participants to and from home, Center, and appointments safely, courteously, and in a caring manner; report any participant or caregiver requests for changes in drop-off or pick up locations.4. Follows established schedules and make adjustments to meet unanticipated changes; determines the safest and most efficient pick-up and delivery routes while considering needs of participants and requirements of clinic and therapies; maintains narrative of route.5. Safely carry out one-person transfers of participants to and from vehicles and inside vehicles. This includes ensuring all passengers wear safety belts and wheelchairs are locked into position.6. Inspects vehicles and maintain them in a clean and safe condition; notify Transportation Coordinator of maintenance or repair needs; at the end of the day ensure that the vehicle is refueled accordingly.7. Maintains standard reports (logs of passengers and miles driven, service records, gasoline purchases) in conjunction with Transportation Coordinator.8. Promptly reports to Transportation Coordinator or other appropriate staff regarding participant-related concerns noted in home or van. Documents according to program policy.9. Provides courier service for supplies, interoffice mail, and laboratory specimens as needed. Delivers medications and other supplies to participants.10. Works in a safe manner, following safety guidelines and standards. Attends required safety in-services. Offer guidance or assistance to staff working in an unsafe manner.11. Reports accidents and incidents to Transportation Coordinator immediately.12. Follows proper infection control procedures and maintain a supply of emergency clean up kits on assigned vehicle.13. In the absence of the Transportation Coordinator, the Transportation Specialist may participate as a reporting member of the Interdisciplinary Team.14. In conjunction with Transportation Escort, maintains a safe and calm environment for participants.15. Performs duties as required or assigned by emergency or other operational reasons for which the employee is qualified to perform.16. Must comply with applicable U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations.Denotes essential job functions.
COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
Demonstrates ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing. Demonstrated desired interest in working with the elderly.Must be mentally alert and have an ability to effectively plan and organize assignments in the most efficient manner. Must be flexible, adaptable, and able to function in stressful situations.Demonstrated ability to safely operate a wheelchair accessible van or vehicle.Specialized knowledge of local geography preferred.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or related equivalent required.Must maintain a current Pennsylvania State Drivers License and maintain a driving record free from major infractions including but not limited to: Driving Under the Influence (DUI), negligent, recklessness, or excessive minor infractions or convictions.Valid DOT physical card required.Employee must successfully complete defensive driving and passenger assistance training course within three months of hire. Additionally, employee must complete CPR and First Aide Training within six months of hire and maintain current standing thereafter.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is typically performed in community environment. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania drivers license is required. This position is considered light in nature as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor. This position is classified as exposure category III concerning occupational exposure to the hepatitis B virus (HBV) and the human immunodeficiency (AIDS).
