Job Overview

The Indian Health Service (IHS) is the principal federal health care provider and health advocate for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). The IHS goal is to raise Indian health status to the highest possible level. IHS provides leadership and direction to programs and activities designed to improve health outcomes to over 1.9 million AI/AN through a system of IHS, Tribal, and Urban operated facilities and programs.

The IHS is required by law to give absolute preference to qualified applicants who meet the Secretary of the Interior's definition of Indian for appointment to vacancies within the IHS in accordance with established IHS policy as outlined in the Indian Health Manual Part 7, Chapter 3. This position is located in the Urgent Care/Fast Track Clinic of the Medical Service Branch of Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), Shiprock, NM. Incumbent serves as a Nurse Practitioner. The position reports to the Chief of Urgent Care/Fast Track of the facility.

  • Provides comprehensive diagnostic, preventative, and therapeutic health care service to patients and family members between that of a skilled professional nurse and a physician. Secures a healthy and developmental history from the patient or parent; records findings and makes critical evaluations.

  • Performs basic physical assessment using techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation and diagnostic instruments. Performs or requests special screening and developmental tests and laboratory tests and interprets the results.

  • Gives direct physical and psychological medical care in emergencies and in the presence of illness or disability in order to maintain, life, provide comfort, reduce distress and enhance coping ability. Works collaboratively with the physician in management of selected complex complex medical problems.

  • Provides emergency services or crises intervention in the absence of the physician including lifesaving emergency procedures in order to stabilize a patient sufficiently to transport for specialized services.

*Registration: *Applicants must have active, current registration as a professional Nurse in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

GS-11: One (1) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level; OR, Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D or equivalent); OR, three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education.

*GS-12: *One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.

Examples of Specialized Experience: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks: experience as a Nurse Practitioner providing direct and comprehensive primary, preventative and therapeutic medical and nursing care for all patient age groups as well as assisting other health professionals develop treatment protocols and standard policies and procedures. Work experience reflecting knowledge of current nursing principles, practices, procedures, standards of care required to provide advance nursing care skill set. Experience assessing the health status of an individual , managing the care of selected patients, and providing various medical treatments, health teaching, counseling to individual and families throughout all age groups.

Federal employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.

Works on a regularly assigned basis to provide continuity of medical care during days and evenings including holidays, and weekends. Shifts will be primarily twelve (12) hours in length with occasionally eight (8) or ten (10) hour shifts as dictated by work load.

The selected individual is required to obtain and maintain medical staff clinical privileges, including any licensure requirements. If privileges are not obtained or maintained during employment, the employee will be subject to adverse actions, up to and including removal from federal services.
