Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Shreveport, Louisiana, an affiliate of the Louisiana State University Health Science Center (LSUHSC), is accepting applications for a full-time General Surgeon position, who will also qualify for an academic appointment at LSUHSC. The General Surgery Staff Physician is administratively and clinically responsible to the Chief, Surgical Service. He/She provides clinical management of patients with General Surgery diseases. Candidates must demonstrate significant and distinguishing accomplishments in teaching, clinical research, and clinical practice. Must have a proven record of scholarly works that qualifies the applicant for this position, and be academically involved in resident education. Will work as a member of a modern, technical, surgical team and is able to deliver quality patient care. Provides training to residents from LSU Medical School and interacts with all disciplines in the medical center.

Basic Requirements:

• Must be proficient in written and spoken English. • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Preferred Experience:

• American Board of Surgery Certified; • Graduate of an ACGME - accredited general surgery residency training program; • Graduate or finishing an accredited fellowship training in surgical oncology; • Demonstrated excellent skills in esophageal, hepatic and pancreatic operative procedures; • Demonstrated excellent skills in low to very low anterior resection including total proctocolectomy with coloanal anastomosis; • Demonstrated excellent skills in laparoscopic hepatobiliary operations, laparoscopic colon operations and laparoscopic spleen operations; • Excellent letters of recommendation from the program director and 2 attendings for recent graduates or from the Chief of Surgery and 2 other surgeons in most recent hospital for those who are currently in practice; • Demonstrated ability to work with surgical residents and medical students; • Strong commitment to the visions of the VA – care of the Veteran, teaching, research and quality improvement • Demonstrated ability to work with physicians and providers from all other specialties.
