Fuels Operator Lead

Responsible for performing fuel transfers, aircraft refueling, testing, maintenance and operation of fuels facilities. In addition, responsibilities include training new Fuels Operators and coordinates projects as assigned.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Assumes a leadership role in the performance of fuel transfers, aircraft refueling, equipment testing, maintenance and operation of Fuels facilities. Positions exist at field camps, South Pole and McMurdo Station. McMurdo based Fuels Operators may do a rotation at field camps and/or South Pole Station. Field Camp based personnel are assigned to one field camp for the season.

  • Responsible for training new Fuels Operators in all areas of Fuels tasking as listed below. Offers assistance to Supervisor and/or Foreman in pre-deployment training and on ice training.

  • Performs aircraft refueling tasks.

  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks, as directed.

  • Inspects and maintains the fuel pits area, which may include the tanks, hose, pipelines, pump, filters, sumps, nozzles, and secondary containment structures daily.

  • Is required to work outside in extreme cold weather conditions.

  • Performs variety of tests on aviation fuel.

  • Performs fuel transfers, via pipe, hose and tanks.

  • Physical activities to include lifting up to the safety regulation maximum, climbing, crawling, and dragging hoses.

  • Performs fuel hose deployments and redeployments in the McMurdo and South Pole area.

  • Performs cleaning of bulk fuel tanks.

  • Performs other duties as required.


  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Valid driver’s license is required.

  • Wilderness First Responder certification preferred for field camps.

  • A minimum of two years combined experience working with any of the following is required: fuels, plumbing, pumps, hoses and valves. Mechanical or technical experience related to small engine repair, auto or equipment repair, wild land firefighting, irrigation or farming work, golf course maintenance, snow making, or any discipline in engineering can also be considered as qualifying.

  • Must demonstrate leadership abilities. Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum.

  • Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods is required.

  • Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts and safety objectives.

  • US citizenship is required.
