Sr. Human Resources Generalist/Finance Specialist


Provides Human Resources and Financial support to all persons on station in conjunction with multiple program and company requirements. This position deploys during the austral summer.

GENERAL DUTIES (not all inclusive):

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Works closely with the Station Area Director and/or Winter Site Manager and appropriate corporate HR departments to investigate and resolve employee issues.

  • Provides human resources and finance support to all employees on station in conjunction with Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) and specific company guidelines.

  • Ensures accurate documentation of personnel changes and advises and/or forwards all changes to Project Headquarters on a timely basis. Maintains documentation.

  • Provides supervisory training, to include the employee evaluation process, documentation and policies, to all employees with supervisory responsibility. Conducts other employee training as needed.

  • Coordinates the end of season performance evaluation cycle for PAE employees on station.

  • Researches and answers employee questions regarding payroll, W-4, expense reports, and benefits. Responds to employees in a timely manner.

  • Performs daily cash reconciliation with retail store receipts.

  • Prepares and submits weekly and monthly financial reports in accordance with ASC and/or specific company deadlines.

  • Reconciles and balances the Finance account and Retail Store account monthly.

  • Distributes bi-weekly cash distributions when proper paperwork is submitted by the employee.

  • Monitors and orders cash for the station and documents cash to be sent off to station.

  • Provides administration of Workers Compensation Program in conjunction with HR staff in Denver and

  • Assists in handling patient transportation off the ice if needed for medical issues.

  • Coordinates redeployment meetings and provides COBRA forms and information to employees upon re-deployment.

  • Prepares general correspondence and personnel-related message traffic.

  • Performs data entry, spreadsheet work, and financial reports with a high level of accuracy.

  • Responsible for proofreading own work, correction of errors, and creation of final copy.

  • Maintains timely and accurate communication with company headquarters.

  • Handles confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, financial information, etc.) in accordance with management policy.

  • If necessary, interacts with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, both over the telephone and in person, in a professional and tactful manner.

  • Employees and contractors may, in the course of performing their official duties, have access to a wide variety of personal identifiable and sensitive information (PII/SI) electronically and in hard copy. Personal and sensitive data including Social Security numbers, date and place of birth, demographic data, home addresses/telephone numbers/personal email addresses, passport numbers, bank account numbers, performance reviews, reviewer identity tied to performance reviews, unfunded proposals, proprietary parts of funded proposals, and other similar information should be protected according to the Federal regulations and United States Antarctic Program policy, and only disclosed in accordance with the United States Antarctic program requirements.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • BS/BA degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or related or relevant experience accepted in lieu of a degree. Degree is preferred.

  • PHR or SPHR preferred.

  • Three years of Human Resources Employee Relations experience that includes handling investigations, as well as a combination of experience in performance evaluations, compensation and benefits, and recruiting is required.

  • Two years (2) cash handling experience that includes balancing and reconciliation is also required.

  • Finance knowledge and/or training would be helpful.

  • Computer literacy is required, including Microsoft Excel and word processing software. Knowledge of Word and Microsoft Access is preferred.

  • Must be detail oriented and have strong organizational skills.

  • Complies with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedures.

  • Requires deployment to Antarctica for an extended period of time.

  • Must successfully complete the physical, dental and psychological (if applicable) examinations as required by the NSF for deploying to Antarctica.

  • Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives.

  • US citizenship or Permanent US Resident status is required.
