Job Overview:

The Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer will support the Controls Team within the Engineering Department. The Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer will have experience in and exercise skills across many domains including: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronic, and IT. They will install, perform start-up/commissioning, operate, maintain, troubleshoot, document and repair a wide variety of Building Automation Systems in Critical Environments.

The Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer will works closely with Project Managers throughout the project life cycle. They are responsible to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the installation of programming software for HVAC and Data Center Controls in a safe and efficient manner. The Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer must exercise tact and courtesy in contacts with customers, co-workers and other trades involved in a project.

The Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer will be responsible for developing control programming and graphics, and building a library for use across all Data Centers. The individual will be responsible developing methods for integrating various systems and technology into the existing Building Automation Systems as well as into other data management platforms.

Additionally the Controls Systems Engineer/Programmer will bring their experience in system optimization to the table as they will be making suggestions on efficiency modifications both to program development and deployment and equipment operations and sequences.

  • Interpret control sequences and create programming language.

  • Work directly with outside engineer consultants, field installers, and ALL in house staff (project managers/engineers).

  • Responsible for timely completion of assigned projects.

  • Reviews projects with assigned Project Manager to establish schedules and project goals.

  • Review specifications and control drawings with assigned engineer and/or project manager to ensure proper project procedures

  • Coordinates with Engineers and/or Project Manager to verify project scope and sequence of operations are installed properly on projects

  • Coordinates with Engineers and/or Project Manager the scheduling of program installation to ensure the job follows the scheduling needs.

  • Reports weekly to Project Teams, accomplishments, schedule issues, and any issues that may impact the efficiency and timely completion of the project.

  • Maintains responsibility of proper procedure including adherence to codes, specifications, and safety regulations

  • Maintains accurate as built drawings noting any sequence changes

  • Assists the successful transition of the project from installation to Facility Operations Staff

  • Debug and troubleshoot system operations while making documented improvements so that we can apply solutions to revision controlled standards.

  • Develop and implement graphical user interface for Building Automation Systems per the requirements of standards and end users.

  • Integrate data points from various systems into and out of the Building Automation Systems

  • Assist Site, Engineers, and Project Team develop and review Sequence of Operations for Mechanical and HVAC Systems.

  • Assist Site, Engineers, and Project Teams in Building Automation Testing/Commissioning by helping develop custom commissioning scripts per the Sequence of Operations.

Minimum Qualififcations:

  • 10 years of relevant mission critical experience

  • 5+ years DDC programming experience with 3 or more years specialized experience in a BACnet IP, TCP/IP, LonTalk, SQL and modbus protocols and knowledge of interface control system (integration software).

  • Thorough knowledge of Mechanical and Electrical control systems including programming experience for HVAC and BAS systems is required.

  • Strong computer related skills network and systems experience with broad knowledge of concepts, principles, practices and procedures in systems development.

  • Knowledge of programming and writing operational code. Exposure to object oriented programs.

  • Automated Logic Controls program and logic development or the ability to quickly learn and develop it

  • Ability to review, understand and analyze all types of mechanical drawings & specifications.

  • Strong background in controls engineering, design, construction and commissioning of mission critical facilities

  • Strong background and experience in developing equipment and system Sequence of Operations

  • Strong background and experience in developing control programming and graphics

  • Understand recognized Architecture, Engineering, and Contractor project delivery conventions including roles, responsibilities, document development and control, commissioning and turn-over through operations

  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously utilizing and directing external engineering firms as required

  • Familiar with conventional and emerging technologies employed in data center designs

  • Strong background in industrial controls, HVAC, fire suppression systems, smoke detection systems, power generation and distribution; their industry conventions; codes, standards and practices; and major OEM offerings

  • Ability to work in virtual teams in highly mobile environments with global assignments

  • Ability to effectively translate highly technical systems and concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Tools

  • 10-20% travel globally

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with ALC is required. Trane Summit or Tracer, Systecon, Teletrol, DataTrax, and any other BMS System is a plus.

  • Tridium & Niagra experience is preferred

  • Ability to take real world experience in HVAC and mechanical system operations to develop programs and sequences

  • Exposure to creating solutions for energy efficiency in mechanical systems operations

  • Knowledge of codes and industry standards

  • Procedural documentation development and review

  • PLC experience

  • System databasing and management

  • Standards development and maintenance

  • Data Center Experience

  • BS in an Engineering discipline

  • 5+ years experience in a mission critical environments (data center preferred)

  • 5+ years in controls systems logic design or system programming

  • 3+ years in system integration

  • 2+ year experience in customer service or equivalent.
