The Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (DRRTP), provides therapeutic homlelike environment for active residential rehabilitation directed toward development of the skills necessary for return to community-based living. The LVN serves resident with psychoactive substance abuse disorder, homeless seeking vocational retraining, medically rehabilitation and long-term schizophrenia maintenance. The LVN provides coverage during Morning sick call, which provides quality care to the resident of the DRRTP in a timely manner.

*Tour of Duty: The DOM is operational 24 hours a day. Tours of duty include 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, 3:30 pm - 12:00 pm and 11:30 pm - 8:00 am. Other approved tours of duty are weekends, evenings and rotating shifts are utilized as needed for patient care coverage. *

DUTIES:The LVN performs patient care duties under the direct supervision of the RN. He/she provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, spiritual, chronological, recreational, and diversion needs of the adult (ages 17-59) or geriatric (ages 60+) patient. The LVN demonstrates knowledge of changes associated with aging and provides care based upon age related factors as specified in his/her competencies. Demonstrates ability to observe, identify and respond to the patient's needs for nursing, medication and equipment-assisted care and to recognize deviations from normal. Recognizes the need for and demonstrates ability to institute emergency measures when indicated (i.e., codes, disasters, fire and safety issues). Demonstrates practical knowledge of human behavior, motivations, and reactions to situations and uses this knowledge in working effectively with patients, family and other staff members. Establishes therapeutic relationships with all others (co-workers, patients, visitors, supervisors, etc.), through application of effective listening and interpersonal skills (oral, written, and non-verbal). Contributes to the interdisciplinary team in developing, implementing, and evaluating the patient's treatment plan. Promotes patient participation in the therapeutic community by fostering self-reliance and independence. The incumbent is directly responsible to the identified Nurse Manager.

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Must be a graduate of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the National League for Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant.

  • Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

  • Must have a full, current, active and unrestricted license as a graduate licensed practical or vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States or District of Columbia.

  • Must pass a pre-employment examination if selected.

Preferred Experience:

  • Ability to perform in the role of charge nurse w/ the ability to communicate effectively while delegating tasks and overseeing other LVNs and CNAs

  • Astute prioritization skills

  • Critical thinking skills with ability to apply hands-on

  • Medication administration

  • At least 1 year of experience in rehabilitation, long-term care, hospice/palliative

  • Experience in computerized documentation and med administration

  • Current BLS

Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
