The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), is comprised of two large Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers located in Temple and Waco, a large stand-alone multi-specialty outpatient clinic in Austin, four outpatient clinics located in Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, Cedar Park, and Palestine plus a rural outreach clinic in La Grange. TEXAS HAS NO STATE TAXES!!!

CTVHCS has affiliation agreements with Texas A&M; College of Medicine/Baylor-Scott and White Healthcare System, the University of Texas Southwestern/Seton Healthcare Network, and the Texas Department of State Health Services. More than 250 Residents and Fellows are trained annually at CTHVCS, plus more than 200 medical students per year. Over 100 CTVHCS medical staff have faculty appointments with Texas A&M; College of Medicine.

The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System has immediate openings for the emergency room. Formal training and experience in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Family Practice is preferred. This position is aligned under Ambulatory Care Service. The facility is affiliated with Texas A&M; University. Consultants in all specialties and subspecialties support the emergency department. There is management of acute stroke and acute coronary management in collaboration with Texas A&M; and Scott and White Hospital. Responsibilities include duties in the Emergency Department (ED) and participation in the ED Emergency Preparedness Response. The Emergency Department Physician is accountable to the Emergency Department Director and is responsible for providing effective delivery of outpatient care while meeting and exceeding compliance standards.

This position is located in Temple, Texas. The duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform assessments/examinations on initial encounters with unscheduled, emergency and new patients.

  • Coordinate patient treatment plan (involve specialists as appropriate).

  • Order, interpret and include appropriate routine diagnostic tests and x-ray studies necessary to complete the Evaluation and treatment plan.

  • Provide physician oversight to Emergency Department nurses and Emergency Department mid-level practitioners.

  • Participate in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.

  • Recommend patients for hospital admissions and coordinate care with accepting physician.

  • Utilizes proficient data-entry (typing) skills.

  • BLS required and ACLS required

  • Procedural skills for procedures like Endotracheal intubation, Central line placement etc required.

Basic Requirements*: *

  • Must be US Citizen (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.

  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.

  • Must have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

  • Must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

  • Must have completed a residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)

Preferred Experience:Training and experience in Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine or Family Medicine. Experience and interest in training residents and other trainees preferred.

Staff Physician: None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
