VA Maine Healthcare System (formerly Togus VA Medical Center) proudly serves Maine's veterans at a main campus in Augusta or any of nine outpatient clinics. It's a modern 67 bed facility with general medical, surgical, intermediate and mental health beds, as well as 40 Skilled-Longer Stay beds, a 25-bed Dementia Unit, and a hospice unit. Provides cardiology care for inpatients and outpatients at VA Maine Health Care System, Togus, and select Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs).

The Cardiologist must have a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine and be board certified/eligible in Cardiology. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required. Must be qualified to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with cardiac diseases according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods and techniques.

  • Works at both the Togus campus and select CBOCs, as needed.

  • Performs outpatient examinations.

  • Performs Compensation and Pension exams and/or reviews.

  • Provides consultation service related to cardiology to the medical staff.

  • Admits and manages inpatients.

  • Interprets echocardiograms (including stress echos, dobutamine echos and transesophageal echocardiograms).

  • Interprets holter monitor studies.

  • Interprets event recorder studies.

  • Interprets electrocardiograms (EKGs).

  • Certified in Nuclear Cardiology.

  • Supervises and interprets exercise stress tests.

  • Inserts permanent and temporary cardiac pacemakers (desirable).

  • Inserts Swan Ganz catheters.

  • Participates in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.

  • Serves on Medical Staff Committees.

  • Attends Medical Service staff meetings and meetings of the Medical/Dental staff.

  • Ensures communication with the incoming evening Medical Officer of the Day regarding patient care issues.

  • Completes medical records using the electronic medical record system and following hospital documentation requirements.

  • Completes mandatory training.

*Work Schedule: *8am-4:30pm Monday-Friday. One in four call rotation is required.

Basic Requirements*: *

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability required.
