Primary Duties

The Division of Prevention and Community Health collaborates with our partners to enhance the health of individuals, families, and communities. We work to prevent disease and promote a healthy start, healthy choices, and access to services.

The Health Promotion and Communication Section serves as consultants to the rest of the division on using health promotion processes and effective communication strategies to improve the health literacy and health behaviors of Washington's population. We assist the division in strategic thinking and consistent messaging related to preventing disease, and promoting a healthy start in life, healthy choices, and access to services.

This position serves as an information and graphic design specialist supporting programs and offices in the division to ensure that communications are understandable, useful, easy to locate, and that they convey consistent, clear public health messages. The position consults on the development of health promotion and communication strategies. It offers specialized skills in the development of effective health educational materials and serves as liaison with translation companies for the translation of messages and documents to languages other than English. It provides technical and production services for electronic and print media.

Duties include:

  • Working with senior-level health educators and communicators in the section, as well as division and agency program staff, to produce effective health education and communication products for public audiences and health professionals.

  • Finding and creating illustrations, photos, and other graphic elements for use in health promotion and to support the work of other designers, health educators and communicators.

  • Developing, creating, editing, and producing health education materials in print and other media including the web.

  • Providing consultation and technical assistance to DOH program managers and staff on health promotion practices, health education material development, language translation services, appropriate media for audiences, and production processes.

Required Qualifications NOTE: Experience may have been gained concurrently.

  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in Graphic Design, Visual Communication, or a closely related field.

  • Three (3) or more years of experience using high-end Macintosh computer publishing equipment and software.

  • Two (2) or more years of professional experience designing and producing materials.

Desired Qualifications NOTE: Experience may have been gained concurrently.

  • Two (2) or more years of professional experience in marketing or multimedia production.

  • One (1) or more years of experience developing educational materials that reinforce behavior change or behavior maintenance.

  • Professional experience in writing and editing.
