Job Summary: The Assistant Vice President is responsible for leadership and supervision of one or more departments within a division.

Additional Department Summary: The Assistant Vice President for Economic Development (AVPED) promotes and develops UA strategic partnerships across the UA System, local, state and federal government, businesses, industries, and other institutions of higher education (public and private) within the State of Alabama. These efforts focus on areas of science, engineering, and technology important to the economic and workforce development of Alabama. This position involves extensive interaction with a diverse set of internal and external constituencies, including University campus and system-wide leadership, local, state and federal government officials, and foundation and business representatives. The AVPED will assist the Vice President for Research and Economic Development in creating an atmosphere for interdisciplinary collaborations and partnerships on campus, while fostering joint-venture research and entrepreneurial initiatives with external individuals, companies, and government agencies. The AVPED will report to the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. This position requires travel and the performance of any other related duties as assigned. Roles and responsibilities The successful candidate will: • Provide leadership in the creation of a strategic economic development plan that includes a strong vision, aggressive goals, and targeted accountability measures. • Identify and encourage initiatives for attraction, retention and expansion, entrepreneurial development, and workforce readiness. • Facilitate UA Economic Development branding, where the University is a recognized resource for economic development. • Coordinate efforts with UA and Tuscaloosa area constituencies and with the UA System to develop programs that support UA technologies and research endeavors as well as small business development within the community. • Serve as a University representative on strategic university-business-government collaborations throughout the state. • Serve as a liaison to recruit companies to Alabama while also supporting the retention and growth of existing companies. • Participate in community organizations and collaborate with partners that affect the goals and initiatives of the OVPRED. Such organizations include, but are not limited to, the Alabama Department of Commerce, the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, Cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport, Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority, Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, and the State government (including the Governor's Office). • Analyze trends and conditions that will impact faculty research and scholarship at The University of Alabama, identifying strategies to maximize opportunities. • Increase the competitiveness of UA research efforts by identifying areas of opportunity and weakness. • Oversee and coordinate the Alabama Innovation and Mentoring of Entrepreneurs Center (AIME), the Alabama International Trade Center, the Alabama Small Business Development Center Network (ASBDC), the UA Center for Economic Development, the Economic Development Academy, and the Economic Development Alliance. • Assist in the development and marketing of business incubator space, in conjunction with UA entities, and both city and county economic development offices. • Develop and maintain relationships with the leadership, site selectors, and commercial and industrial realtors of prospective companies. • Participate in the long-range planning and development of marketing strategies and recommend aggressive goals for business cultivation efforts. • Work closely with state-wide and regional economic development organizations and workforce providers. • Develop and maintain a good working relationship with UA Strategic Communications, UA/UAS Government Relations, and the media at large. • Represent the OVPRED and The University of Alabama in a professional manner at all times; perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Based on requirements of the position.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience working with local and regional economic development organizations in the Southeastern U.S. to define economic development objectives that create and sustain jobs. A working knowledge of economic development planning for Tuscaloosa and the State of Alabama. Ten years of economic development experience, with experience in job/investment creation as well as corporate, Chamber of Commerce, and State of Alabama economic development. Proficiency in business planning and promotion, market analysis, relevant municipal legislation, and financial management.

Skills and Knowledge: • History of attracting businesses to a community or university environment. • Demonstrated skills in reporting, data analysis, and research. • Ability to build and sustain relationships with targeted business executives, site selectors, and commercial and industrial real estate professionals. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Creative and strategic-thinking abilities. • Strong organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects. • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member. • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in marketing, business, or a related discipline preferred.
