Washington State Maintenance Technician 2 In-Training in Wenatchee, Washington


The Opportunity: The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is currently seeking to fill a Maintenance Technician 2 In-Training position in our North Central Region out of our Wenatchee/Area 1 office. This position is responsible for maintaining state highways, roadside, infrastructure, and right of way. This position performs a variety of highway and right of way maintenance work to ensure the safe, efficient movement of goods, services, and people.

In order to accomplish these highly skilled and often rigorous tasks, the ideal candidates must be able to perform hard physical and skilled labor such as have the ability to move and lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds in a safe manner, and operate a multitude of power/hand tools and heavy equipment to control vegetation, remove snow and ice, and perform road maintenance.

WSDOT is the steward of a multimodal transportation system and responsible for ensuring that people and goods move safely and efficiently. In addition to building, maintaining, and operating the state highway system consisting of over 18,000 lane miles and 3,600 bridge structures, WSDOT is responsible for the largest ferry system in the nation; owns three Talgo train sets in the Amtrak Cascades fleet; and works in partnership with others to maintain and improve local roads, railroads and airports, as well as to support alternatives to driving, such as public transportation, bicycles and pedestrian programs. Additionally, WSDOT manages the world's widest tunneling project and the world's longest floating bridge. WSDOT's diverse programs and projects are supported by more than 6,800 full-time employees, including engineers, vessel captains, maintenance technicians, environmental specialists, planners, and more. This position will perform the following work:

  • Assist in layout and set-up of traffic control, including setting up signage, manually flagging traffic, and operating attenuator/buffer truck
  • Maintain roadways, including ditching, patching, and hauling materials.
  • Winter snow and ice removal.
  • Effectively use radio and phone equipment to communicate with other crewmembers and lead technician.
  • Maintain roadway features such as guard rail, signs, or reflective features.
  • Respond to emergency call outs, work extended shifts on short notice (days, nights, and weekends).
  • Safely operate trucks up to 54,000 GVW equipped with sanding and other large pieces of equipment.
  • Negotiate rough and steep surfaces during the performance of job tasks.
  • Work with hot asphalt that may be up to 350 degrees. Asphalt work includes: shoveling, raking, hauling and working around asphalt paving equipment.
  • Chemically, manually, and mechanically control vegetation.
  • Maintain and repair drainage systems.
  • Highway debris removal, including danger tree removal and dead animals.
  • Use electronic devices and computers to communicate and document data. Candidates will be considered at the Maintenance Technician 1 or Maintenance Technician 2 depending on qualifications.

*Required qualifications for a Maintenance Technician 1 ($33,504 - $39,444 Annually DOQ): *

  • Have a Washington State Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class A license with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.
  • Have at least 1 year of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operations, or landscaping.
  • Washington State Flagging Card within three (3) months of employment. *Required qualifications for a Maintenance Technician 2 ($36,744 – $43,524 Annually DOQ): *

  • Have a CDL Class A with N endorsement without airbrake restrictions.

  • Have two or more years of experience performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, truck driving, traffic control, construction, timber operation, and landscaping.
  • Washington State Flagging Card within three (3) months of employment. Desirable qualifications at all levels:

  • Experience with snow and ice removal.

  • Experience in repair of roadway, shoulders, guardrail, and signs.
  • Experience operating and transporting heavy equipment.
  • Experience in traffic control including planning, setting signs, and flagging.
  • Have a current Pesticide License or ability to obtain a license within (1) one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding area. Note:This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to become members of the WFSE, or arrange to pay to that union a fee equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's initial 30 days in this classification.
