Job Summary: The chaplain has full responsibility for providing a complete religious ministry to Jewish Veteran patients and family members. The chaplain assesses religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical problems of patients and plans and provides appropriate ministration, including individual in-depth pastoral ministry.

Annual Salary Range for GS-12: $80,234.00 - $104,304.00

Meeting and coordinating the needs Veteran patients and family members located in different venues; including, but not limited to inpatients and outpatients, the newly admitted, pre-and post-operative patients, the critically ill, traumatic brain injured, the terminally ill, homeless, nursing home, substance abuse, spinal cord injured, ambulatory care, and psychiatric. Duties include:
- Presiding over Jewish worship services: rites and rituals to meet the emotional, religious, and spiritual needs of Jewish Veteran patients.
- Providing prayer services as appropriate for the Holy Days.
- Participating in Interfaith Prayer Events including, but not limited to: Commemorative, Memorial Services, National Holiday Salutes, meetings, and gatherings of staff, Veterans and etc.
- Contributing to the formulation and accomplishment of chaplaincy objectives and activities by cooperating closely with colleagues and the supervisory chaplain in an ecumenical/interfaith, team approach to assignments.
- Communicating effectively with persons of diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, ages, and persons having varying types and degrees of disability, in order to understand and address their specific needs.
- Assuring that the right of each and every patient to free exercise of religion is upheld and protecting from proselytizing by staff, other patients, or visitors, regardless of faith group.
- Locating other staff chaplains or clergy persons from the community to meet them when patients have needs that the chaplain cannot meet.
- Accurately documenting patient care, assessment, treatment, and ministry in electronic records systems.

Ecclesiastical Endorsement: An ecclesiastical endorsement, dated within 12 months prior to the closing date of the announcement, from the official national endorsing authority of the Jewish faith group. Ecclesiastical endorsement is the written official statement by the endorsing body certifying that you are in good standing and that you, in the opinion of the endorsing body, are qualified to provide the full range of ministry required by Jewish patients in the VA's pluralistic setting.

Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which included all of the following: at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings, including the study of languages in which sacred writings are written; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religions. (The degree of Master of Divinity is not required, however, that degree satisfies this education requirement). Clinical Pastoral Education: In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have completed at least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) [as defined by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). 800 hours of supervised ministry in a formal training program which incorporated both ministry formation and pastoral care skills development will be considered for equivalence to the required CPE. Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, American's) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work can help build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. At least three years of ministry experience. At least two years of this experience must have followed completion of the qualifying graduate education. Experience during graduate education may count for up to one year of the three years of required experience. One year of the experience must have demonstrated all of the following:
- (a) ability to serve as a consultant or expert to a multidisciplinary treatment team;
- (b) in-depth knowledge of related professional fields, particularly in the behavioral sciences;
- (c) understanding of, and ability to respond to, the particular concerns and issues pertaining to treatment of veterans;
- (d) knowledge of the structure, regulations, practices, and programs of heartache delivery systems;
- (e) ability to interpret and apply a body of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in professional practice;
- (f) ability to develop and maintain liaisons with a variety of outside organizations. *Completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry may be substituted for one year of this experience.
English Language Competency: All applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English. Selective Service Registration: By law, all males born after December 31, 1959 must have registered with the Selective Service (the military draft) or have a valid exemption
Physical Demand: The work involves a considerable amount of walking and standing; as well as sitting and bending; the ability to carry medium weight objects (not to exceed 40 pounds); pushing medium weight carts; and driving/riding in a vehicle for inter/intra campus ministry. Occasional assistance (movement/transfer) of those in wheelchairs or gurneys.
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements. You must show proof that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs; or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.

- The withholding rate for the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) for Federal civil service employees hired on or after January 1, 2014 will be 4.4% of the employee's salary.
