Summary of the Job: Department of Veterans Affairs chaplains work in an interfaith environment as members of a pluralistic chaplaincy. The chaplain has full responsibility for providing a complete religious ministry to Roman Catholic Veteran patients and their family. The chaplain assesses religious, spiritual, moral, and ethical problems of Roman Catholic Veteran patients and plans and provides appropriate ministration, including individual in-depth pastoral ministry. In addition, the chaplain will provide spiritual assessment, consultation, and services for assigned areas of the hospital and be responsible for referral to other chaplains as appropriate.

Position Description:405-0344-0

Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday from 8 am - 4:30 pm. Will be regularly scheduled for on-call duty outside of the regularly scheduled. Duties include:

  • Performing worship service, provide all sacraments, rites and ordinances and literature as needed by Roman Catholic Veteran patients.
  • Setting up the chapel for Roman Catholic worship services and returning the chapel to religiously neutral condition after services.
  • Maintaining appropriate sacred items in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and praying with Roman Catholic patients at their request.
  • Locating other staff chaplains in the medical center or clergy person from the community when patients have religious needs that chaplain cannot meet.
  • Providing when appropriate, extensive and intensive pastoral counseling of individual patient.
  • Providing counsel and pastoral support to relatives of patients in difficult and trying situations to alleviate their anxieties, to foster effective cooperation of these relatives with the treatment regimen of the medical center, and to help them deal with grief.
  • Assuring that the right of each and every patient to free exercise of religion is upheld and patients are protected from proselytizing by staff, other patients, or visitors, regardless of faith groups within a therapeutic milieu, when appropriate.
  • Participating actively on interdisciplinary teams/groups, and committees to assure that the religious and spiritual dimensions of health and wellness are addressed in all aspects of the medical center's holistic patient care.
  • Assisting other health care providers and treatment teams in recognizing and addressing the emotional and spiritual needs of veteran patients are met.
  • Assisting patients and other healthcare providers or teams in translating religious spiritual value into effective living.
  • Communicating effectively with persons of diverse races, cultures, religions, nationalities, ages, and persons having varying types and degrees of disability, in order to understand and address specific needs.
  • Accurately documenting patient assessments, treatment, and ministry in paper and/or on an electronic records systems.

To be considered for this position applicants must meet all of the following requirements: Ecclesiastical Endorsement: An ecclesiastical endorsement, dated within 12 months prior to the closing date of the announcement, from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese for the Military Services USA. An ecclesiastical endorsement is the written official statement by the endorsing body certifying that you are in good standing with the faith group or denomination and that you, in the opinion of the endorsing body, are qualified to provide the full range of ministry required in the VA's pluralistic setting.

Education: A Master of Divinity from an institution accredited by an accrediting organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or the equivalent. Equivalent education is a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution plus at least 70 graduate semester hours which included all of the following: at least 20 semester hours in pastoral ministry; 20 semester hours in any combination of theology, ethics, and philosophy of religion; 20 semester hours in the study of sacred writings, including the study of languages in which sacred writings are written; and 10 semester hours in religious history and/or world religions. Clinical Pastoral Education: In addition to the education requirement, applicants must have completed at least 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) [as defined by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). 800 hours of supervised ministry in a formal training program which incorporated both ministry formation and pastoral care skills development will be considered for equivalency to the required CPE. Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work can help build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. At least three years of ministry experience is required. At least two years of this experience must have followed completion of the Master of Divinity or equivalent education. Experience during graduate education may count for up to one year of the three years of required experience. One year of the experience must have demonstrated all of the following:

  • (a) ability to serve as a consultant or expert to a multidisciplinary treatment team;
  • (b) in-depth knowledge of related professional fields, particularly in the behavioral sciences;
  • (c) understanding of, and ability to respond to, the particular concerns and issues pertaining to treatment of veterans;
  • (d) knowledge of the structure, regulations, practices, and programs of healthcare delivery systems;
  • (e) ability to interpret and apply a body of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in professional practice;
  • (f) ability to develop and maintain liaisons with a variety of outside organizations. *Completion of a doctoral degree directly related to pastoral ministry may be substituted for one year of this experience.

Clinical Pastoral Education in excess of two units counts toward the experience requirement.
