Accredited by the Joint Commission, the Whiteriver PHS Indian Hospital Whiteriver PHS Indian Hospital is 40-bed hospital and provides ambulatory and inpatient services for 17,000 White Mountain Apache Tribal Members and 4,000 Native Americans living in the surrounding areas. The Cibecue Health Center, located 50 miles southwest of Whiteriver, provides outpatient, urgent care, dental, and community health services to 1,800 residents of Cibecue and Carrizo.

One (1) Permanent Full-Time Physical Therapy Assistant position to be filled in the Physical Therapy Department at the Whiteriver Service Unit (WRSU) in Whiteriver, Arizona. The Incumbent will provide standard of care treatment for in-patients and out-patients referred to the Physical Therapy Department for care under the direction of a licensed Physical Therapist. This care includes, but is not limited to patients with orthopedic, neurological, integumentary, cardio-vascular and pulmonary pathologies. The Incumbent will report to the Supervisor of the Physical Therapy Department.

  • Works independently carrying out established treatment plans under the supervision of a Physical Therapist.
  • Provides training in exercise and daily life activities to patients and patients family members.
  • Monitors vital signs, recognizing changes in patients status and takes corrective action.
  • Documents patient's encounter in the patient's electronic health record.
  • Assists with clerical duties such as answering telephone, schedules patient appointments, maintains equipment and provides a clean work environment.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following types of tasks:

GS-7: One year of experience assisting a Physical Therapist in implementing treatment programs, training patients and family members in exercise and daily living activities, providing and assessing treatments, documenting patient encounters in the patient's chart, and recommending changes in the plan of care.


One year of Graduate education in Physical or Rehabilitation Therapy education. Selective Placement factor: The selected individual must possess and maintain a current unrestricted state licensure as a Physical Therapy Assistant (Submit copy of showing expiration date with application). Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which annual leave is earned.
