Johnson Controls Engineering Designer in Wichita, Kansas
RESPONSIBILITY LEVEL: The Engineering Designer will work in the Sustaining & VAVE (Value Analysis / Value Engineering) team that is part of the Unitary Products Group (UPG) for Johnson Controls Incorporated (JCI). This position will be located in the Wichita, KS plant and will report to the Engineering Manager for Sustaining & VAVE.
This position will create value for JCI stakeholders by implementing various cost, reliability, and/or process improvements to residential HVAC systems through the application of proven design drafting principles. Potential cost improvements will be identified by interactions with the Procurement team and regular VAVE benchmarking events. Potential product and process improvements will be identified by interactions with the Field Service, Manufacturing, and Quality teams. Implementation of viable improvements will include the creation of three dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) models, two dimensional prints, and Bills of Material (BOMs). This position will be expected to lead the design drafting portion of both small and large scale projects under the guidance of the Engineering Manager.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES: • Coordinate and implement design drafting projects under the guidance of the Engineering Manager. • Complete projects in a timely and effective manner to ensure that cost and reliability objectives are met. • Participate in Product Development Process (PDP) design reviews for all new product launches to help ascertain the viability of potential product and/or process improvements. • Support product and process improvement activities by participating in cross-functional value stream meetings with Field Service, Manufacturing, and Quality. • Interact frequently with other team members to implement viable product or process improvements according to the assigned priority using the EC (engineering change) process. • Create 3D CAD models of components, assemblies, and/or systems that satisfy the form, fit, and functional requirements of complex mechanical designs. • Prepare accurate 2D prints with appropriate scaling, dimensions, tolerances, details, projections, and views. • Develop and/or modify BOMs in the material requirements planning (MRP) system. • Assist in checking the work of other designers / drafters as assigned by the manager. • Track and report progress on key metrics such as current EC status and anticipated release dates to internal customers, external customers, and upper management. • Provide design drafting support for model makers, technicians, and/or programmers to ensure timely implementation of product or process improvements. • Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS: • Technical or Associate’s Degree in the design and/or drafting fields. • A minimum of seven years of experience working with 3D CAD and BOM programs. • Solid understanding of standard mechanical drafting principles, techniques, and processes. • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills. • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. • Self-motivated with a determination to exceed project objectives. • Ability to organize and manage simultaneous tasks and projects. • Strong interpersonal skills; effective and professional communication. • Ability to make decisions quickly in order to maintain project schedules. • Flexibility and adaptability to changing situations and environments. • Proficiency using the Microsoft Windows operating system in conjunction with the following Microsoft Office modules: Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, and Word.
PREFERRED: • Experience with Pro-E (CREO3) and the SAP material requirements planning program. • Experience in a manufacturing or production environment. • Five years of experience with residential split and/or packaged HVAC equipment including air handlers, indoor coils, condensing units, gas furnaces, heat pumps, and their associated components.
