This VA serves veterans throughout the state of Delaware, southern New Jersey, eastern Maryland and southeastern Pennsylvania. Wilmington offers easy access to I-95 to cultural and recreational opportunities in Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC. Major league sports abound in Philadelphia, sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and swimming at Atlantic coast beaches are popular summer activities. Wintertime is ski time in the nearby Pocono Mountains. Wilmington is served by major air routes thru Philadelphia and Baltimore and major rail routes thru Amtrak and metroliner service. Delaware has no sales tax.

The Wilmington, Delaware VA Medical Center is recruiting for a full-time Physician (Hospitalist). The ideal Hospitalist is a licensed independent practitioner who is highly skilled in the management of acutely ill patients. The provider's responsibilities include evaluation, management, and disposition of admitted patients as well as participating in process improvement initiatives. The Hospitalist staff provide 24/7 coverage of our 16 bed acute care unit, as well as off hour cross coverage of ICU patients.

Responsible for admissions, discharges and ongoing care, medical consultation for non-medical patients

ICU care is provided by dedicated intensivist, but must be comfortable with basic ICU care for cross coverage after hours with tele-ICU assistance

Involvement in process improvement initiatives and utilization management

Work Schedule:shift work, with varying tour hours, days, nights, weekends and holidays.

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
