The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking qualified individuals for a Cook 2 permanent part-time position, located at Ahtanum View Work Release in Yakima, Washington.

This part-time position that works a minimum of 20 hours per weekwith the possibility of extra hours being available as institution needs fluctuate. This position also offers benefits.

Work Schedule: Saturday/Sunday 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with at least one day during the week.

Must be available to work days, swing, split, rotational shifts, weekends and holidays. Must be willing and able to work overtime and call back shifts as required to maintain operations.

At AVWR, an adult correctional facility, this Cook 2 position prepares food on an assigned shift, in support of the Department of Corrections' Offender Food Service Program and its Mission: The Department of Corrections in collaboration with its criminal justice partners, victims, citizens, and other stakeholders will enhance community safety, reduce victimization, and hold offenders accountable through the administration of criminal sanctions and effective correctional programs.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Preparation and service of food.

  • Order, inventory, store and and reporting tasks.

  • Train, coach and instruct offenders in general food services cleaning practices.

  • Monitor offenders while in the kitchen/dining area.


**Required Qualifications:

Cook 2:**

Two years' cooking experience in a large-scale food service or culinary operation.

Completion of course in large-scale cooking may be substituted for one year of experience.


One year as a Cook 1 in State service. In addition to the above


  • Prepare meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) using a variety of cooking techniques including cook, steam, broil, roast, sauté, simmer, bake
  • Work in a face paced environment
  • To stand, walk, stoop, reach, push, pull, bend, kneel, twist, turn and lift object up to 40 pounds unassisted
  • *Take direction and follow written and oral instructions
  • *Write clearly, factually and concisely
  • *Verbally communicate clearly and effectively
  • *Safely operate and handle a variety of kitchen equipment, e.g. knives, ovens, mixers, slicers, food processors, steamers grills, electric kettles and other tools
  • *Prioritize, organize and schedule daily work
  • *Work well with others – team work and work alone on a shift
  • *Work in an adult correctional facility where offenders are present
  • *Maintain security, order and discipline of offenders supervised
  • *Role model appropriate behavior to offenders
  • Train, coach and provide constructive feedback to offenders in general kitchen cleaning practices. * KNOWLEDGE OF:**

  • Progressive food preparation techniques – cooking, baking, sauté.......

  • Methods and procedures for large scale food preparation and production
  • Food inventory systems and procedures including stock rotation and organization, receiving food orders
  • Food service record keeping and reporting
  • HACCP protocols, practices and tools for food service including rethermalization of food products.
  • Basic mathematics (add, subtract, multiple & divide) and ability to perform
  • Basic computer skills – Outlook , Microsoft Word, Excel

Cook 1 (In-Training)

One year of experience in food preparation or cooking. Completion of course in large scale cooking may be substituted for experience.

Note: Employees in these positions are required to furnish and maintain a food and beverage service workers permit through the local health department.
